Rudy your name is so appropriate considering the things you say :)

Actually one of Canada´s rich historical moments was when we burnt down the original White House in Washington D.C. back in 1812. This was in retaliation to an american attack upon our parliament buildings. I wish I could have been there to lend a match!

we have a great history...keeping the French in, keeping the US out, and finding a way to have peace with our first nations, coming to the aid of Europe in WW2 long before the US even thought about it. what more do you want! who wants money that´s all the same colour... or should we say color!

I will take Canadian history anytime over slavery, discrimination, and wars with anyone who disagrees.

Hi guys, Nice conversation about history of Canada except for some people getting excited a bit. (No offense meant)

Anyways, my view after all these replies is, if I had been a French-Canadian, I would be surprised to call myself a citizen of British Monarchy. (thats just my view). Hope nobody gets excited about my view. Probably there should be a vote for asking the people to decide whether they still want to be in the monarchy. (I think I am not creating a debate again) Thanks friends. Kind responses appreciated.

French culture is an important part of Canadian history, I agree. It just turned out that the French were not as keen to keep fighting for Canada as the British. Also, the French (France) are quite proud of their republic and have not had a King for a few hundred years. Jo are you aware of St. Pierre and Miquelon? It is a French territory (owned 100% by France) just south of Newfoundland, which unlike Canada is under the direct rule of another country. In addittion, Canadians are not citizens of Britain nor are we British, we belong to the British Commonwealth, along with India, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and other nations. It is an association like the European union. Hope this clears things up a bit.

Some things people are forgetting,

The Whitehouse was burned in 1813, not 1812.
It was burned down by the British army, whom the majority returned to Britain after the war. The "Canadian" part of the war were just small militias... the majority of the "red coat" army was British regulars.

We are (French and English) citizens of Canada. We are a soveriegn nation. None of us are citizen´s of the British Monarchy.

As far as the French not likeling being part of the British Monarchy... well, they didn´t like being part of the French monarchy either, and so, they choped off the King´s head (read about the French revolution).

One reason the French did not like fighting for Canada, because at that time, the Canadian army was ENGLISH ONLY. Today, French Canadiens represent a proportional part of the army. I mean, would you join an army with officers who yelled at you in a language you did not understand, even when you technically belonged to a bilingual country?

I agree with Sharon, we have a rich history, but not an exciting one. Revolutions, slavery, civil wars, genocide and all these things are exciting to read about... but none of these things has ever happened in Canada.

Citizens of a British monarchy, no, if you want to be difficult about it. We are citizens of a Canadian monarchy and the Queen of Canada is Queen Elizabeth II. These are the facts, and thats the way it has always been. You may not recognize a British Queen of Canada or like the Commonwealth but that doesnt change things. The White house was set ablaze by Canadians, both British and French regardless of the numbers representing either group.

As for the white house "Although the United States was officially at war with Great Britain, more than half of the British forces were made up of Canadian militia. Additionally, many American Indians (now generally called Native Americans in the United States and First Nations in Canada) fought in the war for reasons of their own." I also found this, "In contrast to the American militia, the Canadian militia performed well. French-Canadians, who found the anti-Catholic stance of most of the United States troublesome, and United Empire Loyalists, who had fought for the Crown during the American Revolutionary War and had settled primarily in Upper Canada, strongly opposed the American invasion."

I happen to love the fact that our military history is BORING. I also love the fact that we have two very different languages and culture within our country. I love the fact that we can argue- but do it politely. I love the fact that we would cry if any of our regions would want to leave... sort of like a child leaving home.

Other countries might have interesting history, impressive battles, and high profile in the current world stage but I am quite happy to live with my neighbOUr in a peaceful way. Appreciate their language, customs, and perspective on the world. Vive le Canada.
