Subject: Interview waiver for skilled workers
Hi all ...it is my understanding that many applicants get interviews waived. Does anybody have a clue how do the immigration officials decide whether or not to interview an applicant?

From talking to others I´ve gathered that they call for an interview a)if they want to verify the authenticity of education and/or work ex docs submittted or b)to determine language abilities. Please correct me if I´m wrong or have inadequate information.

In my case, I came to Canada at age 19 and have most education documents from here. All my work ex docs are from Canada. I have strong letters of reference clearly stating that I have excellent english language abilities. I am hoping that an interview would be waived for me. Also I have 70 points right now. I applied in Buffalo in February 2004.

Please advise. Thank you

Hi,

Interview waiver depends upon the perfect documentation, flawless representation of the facts and leaving no chance of confusion.

Interview waiver is not mainly dependant upon language skills, but it is one of the factors.

I would strongly suggest to take IELTS if English is not your native language. It is not mendatory, but by taking IELTS you atleast know how much points you secure for the language factor. Otherwise, it totally depends upon visa officer´s judgement.

Yap, taking the IELTS test is a good idea. If you think you can pass the test - go for it.
By taking the test they see that you are prepared and that you are trying your best to make their job easier as well.

Thank you all for your feedback. I´d appreciate if you could provide input on another idea.

I wrote the paper based TOEFL in ´99 and got a 633. At that point most canadian univs required a minimum score of 550. Also I scored an 85th percentile (score 620) in my SAT I verbal section in ´99. These two are standardized English language tests. As you can conclude my scores weren´t borderline. I attached both the scorecards with my immigration application and wrote a letter proving my language abilities. I do not understand the reasoning behind writing another langauge test.
