Subject: Jamaican getting Married to a Canadian
Hi, I am Jamaican who is engaged to be married to a Canadian. I would like to get married in Jamaica because most of my family is here and it´s not easy for them to get visitors visa. My husband to be however thinks it would be better that we get married in Canada because I would automatically become a citizen if we do. Could any please shed some light on this for me. Is this true or does he just want to have his own way. Seeking some answers.I trust him but I just want to know for sure.

I am Canadian and I am engaged to a Tunisian man. We have had a similar discussion. Marriage does not give you immediate status-he must still sponsor you. Canada can choose to say no-and they do sometimes. As for which country to marry...I really think you should marry in the country where you will live, if it is at all possible. Should there be a problem and you decide to divorce - you would file those documents in Canada - not Jamaica. It would make your life much simpler. Why not do what we will do... have a wedding party in your country, and do the legal requirements in Canada. I think everyone would have what they want. best wishes to you.

i got married to a Canadian guy (in reply to: Jamaican getting Married to a Canadian)
hi there,

I am from Manila and my husband is a canadian. He visited me in April and we got married in my country which is the Philippines. We thought about getting married in Canada before but since it was not that easy to get to Canada, he just came over here. After the marriage, he went back to Canada and immediately submitted our papers, him sponsoring me. The processing time was very quick. It would be an advantage if you get married in your country coz permanent resident applications made outside canada is a priority over applications made inside canada (that means u will get ur permanent resident status quicker) and it will add proof to the immigration that your relationship with your husband to be is genuine for him to make that trip to your country. you can apply to be a citizen of canada after 3 years of being a permanent resident. goodluck and best wishes!!!
