Subject: Extending stay in Canada
  Hi there,

I am on student visa. I am waiting for my PP request. My medicals reached Ottawa only last month 3rd week.

I have finished my Master´s degree in Canada. As I am on study permit, I have to join someother degree in order to stay in Canada. I am allowed to work in Canada for one year. Provided I get a job in 3 months after finishing my Master´s degree. Already one month is over, no hope of any kind of job. It looks very frustrated, I am left with nothing else, I have to go back where I am from and keep counting for the days till I get my passport request.

Can anybody suggest the best way to extend stay in Canada, provided that option should be legal and it must not affect my immigration process in any way.

Thanks.

I was able to get my visitor´s status restored after my work permit expired. Make sure that you have enough funds to show and that your documents are in order. The restoration process took about two months in my case and cost $200 for me and same for my wife.

hey Max, I like to know more details plz.

I am gonna try for job in Canada in the next three months. If I don´t get a job, I will extend my visitor´s visa. (I think I have to do this in a Canadian embassy outside Canada, is that right?) Is it extending the visa or getting a new visa? Is that completely acceptable for the CIC, Buffalo guys?

Thanks.

Mountains,
A suggestion for you. If you are finishing up
graduate studies under a professor , then how about continuing as research assistant under the same prof as full time position till you get your immigration. In this way you keep your job till you get your immigration. My impression is 70-80% of the profs are nice and if they have funding they can employ you as technician or research assistant.
Good luck.

Hi Mountains, I am not sure what the steps need to be in your case. My details are as follows: my wife was trying to get a work permit for post-graduate employment but got denied because her school is not authorized to confer degrees. I was trying to extend my open work permit based on her application. The rejection letter stated that we had 90 days to restore our status, which we did by sending an application to Vegreville. The CIC also told us that if we want to get work permits again, we needed to apply outside of Canada. I guess this is because this is going to be a new work permit as opposed to the extension of an existing one (although one should be careful about making *logical* conclusions in dealings with CIC -)). We applied to Buffalo for new work permits once I got the HRDSC confirmation and right now I am waiting for my passport, which will, hopefully, arrive this week.

Mountains, the big question in your case is: once the 90 days expire, are you in the position to extend your visitor´s permit or restore one? You may want to call CIC Call Centre to clarify that.

Cheers,

- Max

Forgot to mention that Buffalo has the worst stats for processing work permit requests than any other US consulate. I wish I looked at that page prior to applying. My only reasoning was that in case I am called up for an interview it is not so far from Toronto. It took them 7 weeks to respond. Detroit has better stats and is only an hour more away. No experience dealing with that office, though.

hey Max, Thanks for the info.

I thought In-Canada people who get a job under post-graduate employment program send their application to Vegreville.

I don´t hope getting a job after 90 days, if I don´t succeed in getting a job within 90 days. Also if I get a job after 90 days, I gotta get permission from Human Resources Canada which is, by far, most companies just loose interest doing it.

Mountains,

If you do find a job within 90 days, send your application to Vegreville. Ours was a brand new work permit, which is why the application had to be submitted outside of Canada.
