Subject: In-Canada: Want to send degree completion letter
Hi guys, sorry for bothering this forum with too many questions.

Let me go through my story once again.

I applied in June ´04
Status in Canada : STUDENT
AOR Jul ´04
IA Apr ´05
Medicals and Documents June ´05
Citizenship: India

I have completed my degree in Canada. Now I am confused, whether to send my degree completion letter to CIC, Buffalo? or if I should refrain from requesting the degree completion letter from the registrar´s office which means if requested I will be marked 90 days from the day I received my last grade to get a job or leave Canada.

Can anybody tell me what I should do about this,.

I would be more happy to send the degree completion to CIC if the processing time is reduced by doing so.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I can´t say if it helps or not for sure. In my case, i graduated in 2004 and sent them a copy of masters and post grad work permit in october. But in the initial assessment in dec 2004, they asked for my masters anyway. So i am not sure if they look at any education or work related documents unless they ask for it. After the initial assessment, i guess the documents they might be interested would be things like marriage certificate, birth of a child etc. An interesting thing i found out is that my vegreville client id number works with eclient for permanent residence
, just like the file number. That i guess is a good thing,
they are aware of all the visa expiry dates, job offer letter that was submitted for work visa etc.

hey Pillai, Yes, thats interesting news for me, my client ID works even for PR status.

As I see from your case that it is not useful if we send the COURSE COMPLETION, I will refrain from doing that. I will look into someother options. Is there any interesting tips you want to give to me in finding for Post-graduate employment program job? Right now I am just passing my resume to known companies, thats all.

Say for example, if I get a job in August and loose the job in the end of August do I have another 3 months from September 1st? Thanks.

Hi,

There is a letter that you could get from the graduate studies office mentioning that you have finished all the requirements for the degree. The date mentioned in that letter is the where the clock starts ticking, not the convocation date. The work permit is valid for one year from the date of issue (not the date of application). It can be renewed for one extra year in some provinces. (may be all provinces now gets a 2yr one right away) You are allowed to work for the employer mentioned in the permit and the province mentioned in the permit and no body else. That means a new permit when changing employers. If you are in good terms with your supervisor, you could query about research projects that you could be part of and a part time job as research assistant and explore if you could "extend" your masters without jumping into phd. It would have been easier if you thought about this scenario before your thesis defence. The job market is not that bad it used to be in 2001. I was supposed to graduate in 2001, but then came the .com burst and nortel and telcos started laying off a huge part of their work force. I worked with my supervisor
on research projects and graduated in 2004. (Its more like
university pushed me out, they got tired of me -:) )
Some jobs don´t get advertised, as they would find a suitable internal candidate. In a unionized job like mine,
it is required for them to search within the bargaining unit before advertising. To get the foot on the door, accept part time positions too. Some of them turn out to be stable full time positions if they like your work. If you are an IT guy like me, central computing services in your university and department IT units are good places to start. I was heading into phd when i got the job in campus in 2003. Then i dropped the phd plans for now. If the immigration process is not over by oct 2006, i have to re-evaluate the options again.
