Subject: Obtaining a Permanent Visa
I am looking to move to Ottawa, Canada from the USA to work and potentially settle down. I am interviewing at one organization, but if that doesn´t work out, I want to apply to other jobs (in international development). What I am finding, however, is that most of these jobs/sites require that you are either a citizen (I am a US citizen) or a permanent resident.

How does one obtain permanent residency? I have looked at the CIC site, but am still a bit confused. I qualify to be a skilled worker through the points system, but is there any way to get permament residency from afar, or do you have to be living in Ottawa for some time in order to achieve this.

Thanks for your advice,

Kweb

Welcome Kweb: You do not have to live in Canada in order to become a permanent resident. Few of us here already live in the country; those who are so lucky to live there already do so under a work visa or student visa or the like, typically on a temporary basis. So most applicants apply from out of the country. If you qualify under the economic, skilled worker class (most common) and do not currently have a secured job in Canada, you will want to apply using the application on the CIC site specifically for this class. It is not a difficult application process, although gathering your life information might take awhile (it took us 9 months! ughhhh), and it does require lots and lots of waiting, which you´ll see discussed over and over on this site (from the US, you can expect to wait at least 1-2 years for the process to be completed). But, the folks on this site are awesome, for the most part, and extremely helpful and supportive. I hope this helps clarify a bit for you. There are other classes in which to apply, such as family class if you have a close (immediate) family member already living in Canada who can sponser you, and some others you´ll see on the CIC site. But it sounds like maybe skilled worker is the way to go for you. Best of luck!

Dear Kweb

In order to become a permanent resident of Canada , you must apply for it from outside of Canada , you have to fill the form , send the proper documentation to the Canadian embassy in charge of your region and wait for hmmmmm , maybe two or 4 years to get your permanent resident visa.

Or apply for a work permit which is approved faster.
