Subject: US - Canada Spouse Application
My first thread, Hi to everyone!

I am a US citizen and my wife and kids are acros the border in Canada. We lived separated for a while but not divorced (until I secured my US Citizenship). I continued to visit and support them at least 2-3 days a week (Detroit-Windsor). Now we decided to settle in Canada, and this can be done by my wife sponsoring me. I am planing to continue working in US an visit them in Canada at the same frquency, in respect to maintaining my US residency.

How the sponsor aplication will affect my visits to them (crossing the border) Do I have to stay in only one country until the application will be approved or I can travel back and forth as previously done? In other words, if the application will be with me outside Canada (in US), can I still visit them as a US Citizen or I will be denied the entry in Canada while the application is pending?

Thanks for your advices!

Hello there ) I am being sponsored into Canada by husband ( I am an US citizen and he is a Canadian citizen), and during the course of the time that the application has been in process, we have visited each other once a month. During the beginning I wasnt questioned about immigration applications, but the last few times I had been questioned pretty harshly when I told them I was being sponsored by husband into Canada, but was allowed to cross. My application has now been approved and I am just awaiting my passport to land now.

Hope that helps =)

I´m just curious, Anonymous: when you crossed the border to see your husband, did you offer that you are in the PR process? Or did they somehow know after they checked your passport? I ask because my husband and I visit Canada a lot (we´re US citizens, and just sent in our PR application last month) for vacation (obviously, it´s our favorite place! :)). We are going up in a couple weeks for a few days, and I´m wondering if there will be any problem. I can´t imagine so, but we´ll likely visit many more times in the next couple of years before getting (hopefully!) our PR. Anyway, I would appreciate your input. Thanks!

Hello Wanna =) I had been crossing the border since last november to see my husband ( was only my boyfriend at my first crossing), so for me I didnt think to offer up the fact that he had sent my application in. I just did what I did at every crossing I have made, honestly answered every question they asked of me. I am not sure that they can check to see if you have applied for a pr, maybe someone else here can answer that =)

From what I understand, the customs officers don´t have immigration data on their computers. If for some reason they deem you suspicious they can send you over to the immigration office for questioning, and the immigration officer will have access to any pending applications. From what my agency tells me, customs officers are more concerned with what you´re carrying, and if you´re from a country where visitor visas are required, they´ll be checking expiry dates, etc.

I´m not sure if this is true or not, but I´ve heard that if you file an inland application (from within Canada), you are not allowed to leave Canada during the processing time. However, if you´ve applied from outside of Canada, you are still free to visit under normal rules and regulations.

My husband is American and our first application that we filed prior to marrying (Conjugal) was refused. After we got married, we thought the prior refused application would pose some trouble at the border, and he had additional documentation during his next visit (letter from our immigration agency explaining his status and intentions, return ticket info, etc), but he just waltzed through at the airport as he always has, nobody asked him anything other than the usual questions (which he used his boxed answer "visiting family".

Hope that helps.
