Privacy
An important concern has been re-enforced with respect to the legality of Embassy staff dealing with case specific enquiries made by telephone. Since Embassy staff cannot be certain that the caller is who he or she claims to be (i.e. the applicant or his/her agent) information from case files cannot and will not be provided on the telephone. This is to ensure that the privacy of our clients is respected in accordance with Canadian privacy legislation. Telephone callers can now access our voice mail system which provides pre-recorded general information about the immigration program and procedures and issues of interest.

In accordance with Departmental policy, the same restriction applies to e-mail correspondence.

Clients are requested to communicate through written media - by letter, fax etc. In this way, the source of the enquiry can be identified and verified before personal information is released.

Any agent wishing to obtain information about an application in process must provide the written authorization of the applicant permitting this office to release information to that agent. The authorization must indicate a specific, named individual (or can indicate several individuals with the same firm) - firm names are not acceptable. Any persons so named as being entitled to the release of such information must be Canadian citizens or permanent resident of Canada. Information will not be released to others. If written authorization has not been provided, no information can be released to any third party.

Damascus. I have read this in similar versions from other sites as well. I thought this embassy explained it very well. I deleted what was embassy specific.

It is amazing how many answers to our questions I find when I hunt around various CIC embassy sites. Frequently Asked Questions is always the best place to start.

all embassies are operating under Canadian law so the privacy act would be the legislation they live with. the policy I have cut and pasted is standard Canadian business practice.
