This is a question I want to ask all of immigrants including myself and Canadian.

Do you want to integrate to Canadian society or choice mosaic multicultural and keep your own way of living?

The reason I want to share this question, I will tell you a funny story.

I went to Chinatown in Vancouver the other day. There is a white guy in a Chinese restaurant just came in. He asked the waitress, a middle age lady. ??How much is your lunch buffet??? That Chinese lady seemed didn??t understand. Then, the white guy spoke slowly and with gesture: ?? how much money is the buffet?? and point to the place placed meals. The answer was:?? no English! No English!??

I bet this was not single time I saw this kind of situation. I am a Chinese too, I found out quite a lot of Chinese don??t speak or speak a little English in Vancouver, and what I feel Richmond night market is just like I am in Asia.

Another story, I drove in Vancouver, several times, Asian ladies drove without consideration, or talking in the cellophane and drive a BMW or BENZ, one time even tailgated me and hit my bumper. We pulled over, ?? No English!!!!?? ?? oh my god, not again!?? I wonder how did you pass your road test! Sigh! I almost wanna ask her, where did you purchase your class 5?

Tell you my thought, as an immigrants, I appreciate Canadian value itself as a multicultural, mosaic society. However, do you think help integrate immigrants to the mainstream society also very important to Canadian society. Check out Richmond, some of shopping mall or restaurants almost got no white people at all. What??s going on here? And people, even my relatives, know a little about the rest of Canada. They even asked me if I could find place to sell rice in Nanaimo? Mosaic right now made a lot of isolated island in Vancouver.

I visited almost every city in British Columbia, I feel isolated immigrants land is quite an obviously problem in Vancouver, not in other cities, not even Victoria. However, the immigrants I talked about in Vancouver got most complain about Canada, hard to find job, competition.

The place like I lived, Nanaimo. Less than 5% are immigrants, maybe no more than 1 thousand immigrants here, people seem happy what they have, they all have job, at lease I knew, nobody unemployment. Same situation in other cities like Revestoke, Kelowna, Merrit, Kamloops. Place like those cities, immigrants seem integrate to Canadian society.

I am not saying intergraded is better than mosaic, I am not sure about answer too, personally I don´t mind give up some of my culture hobby in order to intergraded into Canadian society. For myself, I am 20s, it´s not a problem, person older than me might be a little bid hard.

Please share your thought.

In Buddhism there is a belief in "the middle way." I am not a buddist, and may be way off, but the premise is simple and logical. The middle way is the idea that anything to an extreme is bad/ evil/ damaging. So, should immigrants gaurd aspects of their native culture, identity, and yes, language? Sure? But they should also embrace and assimilate so they do learn English or French, they understand the historical backdrop of the various Canadian holidays and customs. (I still don´t know what Boxing Day is).
Those are my immmediate thoughts after reading your post. IN other words, the world isn´t black or white, it is shades of gray.

DB I agree, if you come to a new place expecting to have it the same as home and do anything to integrate why the hell don´t you stay in your home country ?

The nice thing about multicultural societies is to be able to share your background and customs with others and learn from the others, you should also learn about the country who adopted you and respected as if it were yours.

Once again you made a good point.

take care

grey, yep, "being in the middle way" written in Chinese or Japanese should be "???".yep, I agree that
Boxing day means open your gift box.

you know what? I strongly suggest ICBC to cancel all other language of written exam except French and English. just too many dumb drivers in Vancouver, how do they pass road test if they don´t even speak English, I don´t get it. Even I am an Asian, but I have to admit, Asian ladies´s driving skills are sux.

with the risk of getting yelled at here...
we let PR´s bring thier spouses with no english skills. we let PR´s sponsor their parents and younger brothers and sistes with no english skills. we let business class immigration with no english skills.

Let´s see how loud everyone here screams if CIC changes the rules.

Yup... ticks me off. Then the government is supposed to pay for ESL classes.

The most scary thing in this whole world is an asian woman driver in a Mercedes Benz driving down #3 road in Richmond.

DB has made an interesting observation that hits the core of Canadian immigration policy and some of the problems long time Canadians see in the system. His posting is not useless. I cannot say the same about your response.
