Just wondering if this strikes others as strange as it does me.

Americans and Canadians have to go through this torturous and lengthy application and approval process to be able to cross over and live permanently in each other´s country. Yet the European Union is in the process of eliminating such barriers and allowing freedom of movement, residence, and right to work for all their citizens throughout the EU.

Canada and the U.S. are two very large neighbors that share the world´s longest border. Are relations so strained that for their citiznes to live and work between them is about as difficult and cumbersome as moving to Russia or North Korea?

Does this not seem strange to others here too?

No the reasoning behind the US immigration policy stems from 9/11 and some terrorists getting in from Canada. US will continue to think of more ways to track people coming into the country from any border and make it that much tougher for people trying to immigrate there. I am from the US and now living in Canada. I have to say the immigration process here in Canada is much faster for spousal cases. I got permanent residence here in 6 months. Whereas in the US I´ve been told they have a backlog of cases and it could take as long as 2 years or more for the background and security checks but they are just keeping the country safe.

Couple notes:

1) It was always this difficult between these 2 countries long before 9/11.
2) Why was the EU able to make cross-border movement work despite post 9/11 terrorism?

US has more problems with more than the Canadian border. I went back home couple months ago and it´s like the mexicans have taken over and most of those are illegal and they are having major problems keeping them out. I felt like I was in mexico hearing spanish being spoken. On top of all that my baby´s hat was stolen by one of the freaks while I was shopping. They grabbed it out of the cart and I saw the wetbacks kid wearing it. I can´t find another like it but am still looking. That kind of thing doesn´t happen where I´m living now but the US needs stricter guidelines about these people sneaking in and having no respect to others.

I´m living in San Diego and illegal Mexican immigrants are a real problem here. Local people are offering there help to Border Patrol Police just to keep those guys from US territory. I had my two mountain bikes been stolen recently from my garage hope that Mexican kids are enjoying them now in Tijuana...

Because there is no legal way for Mexican to work in the U.S, there are jobs over there, so they will come, no matter what. cross desert in Texas, or get ripper off by Yankee.

Why don´t you guys think some way to let them work legally, take cash from undertable into payroll system, it might be a huge tax income for your federal government too.

There are legal channels for them to work in the US. Most have no skills and therefore the only way for them to come over is illegally.

Canada and the United States are two separate and distinct countries. We don´t have a European Union style government and Canada is a sovereign nation. Canada has the right to protect its borders by any means it sees fit. Similarly, the USA has the right to do the same. We already have great relations with the USA, so why fix something that isn´t broken?
