Alberta is hopping right now; I just read an article in the Globe and Mail (Toronto newspaper) about how desperate they are for employees. One owner of some Tim Hortons stores(very popular doughnut and coffee chain) in Calgary is 50 people understaffed between her 6 stores; the management is offering $1500 in college scholarship money to new applicants, and the opportunity to win an IPod. No kidding. Apparently the growth is phenonomal, and cost of living quite reasonable. I don´t know what your professional field is, but there seem to be lots of engineering jobs available in Edmonton, too. The winters might be chilly, but you might look into it there. I would definitely suggest staying away from Toronto (and I guess Vancouver, too, from what I read on this board) as the cost of living is extraordinarily high. One bedroom apartments are easily $800-$1200 and up up up in any decent area of Toronto. Luckily, Canada is large, so there are other options. Good luck!

Salaries are often indexed to the cost of living. My job in a smaller community would pay less than it does in the big city. So to have the best of both worlds is not the most realistic request.

The best way to find what you are looking for is to consider where new Canadians are reluctant to go for whatever reason. Edmonton is a good example. Not in the top 10 Canadian cities to call home but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it with the exception of a few cold winter nights.

THe Globe and Mail is not Toronto´s Newspaper, it´s Canada´s National Newspaper. The Toronto Star is Toronto´s Newspaper.

hey guyz.
how about London, ON? I saw in website this is not so big city but looks ok for newcomers. lots of jobs and seems to be less cold (don´t expect as warm as US though!). I´ve been thinking about what place should we live either. but all i know is just some info from website. any suggestion?
since I have little kids, i prefer to live in suburb or smaller city with reasonable living cost, kids friendly community and good school. my husband works as a restaurant business manager (int´l) which has linkage to the big corporation in canada. so it would be easy to find a similar kinda job.
your kindly suggestion would be appreciated. thanks.

Truly Tx: London is awesome--it has pretty much anything you could want, and is small enough to not be overwhelming. It seems very kid-friendly--if you check it out, don´t miss Storybook Gardens and the London Children´s Museum. I don´t know about the schools, but it seems like a pretty well educated city. Might look into Kitchener-Waterloo area, too, about an hour east of London and an hour west of TO. Beautiful area, and nice towns with several universities to keep things hip. The weather in southern Ontario isn´t so different than the northern US, not too cold in the winter, but muggy and hot in the summer. Good luck!

thanks y´all for your helpful suggestions. wannabecanadian, that´s a perfect picture of city that I dreamed of. not far from metropolitan but cozy for living. I used to live in a rural when i was in high school back in kansas. it was suck! people were seems to be what so called redneck people (sorry guys) but it was true. I came from SE asia and I was like dumped into middle of nowhere and didn´t know anybody (I was a foreign exchange student). too far from bigger city so I didn´t shop like what people dream of when they come to western country.
well, i am not expecting to live in the teeny weeny city like that. seems like london is my type. thanks again!!!

Well said....truly tx. We (me, my wife and 5 and half son) would be moving to Regina in October 2005. we were wondering how good are job opportunities in and around Regina? As initally, i would be trying out any job ($ 3,000) to help support me and my family and then after a year or two i would like to do MBA from univ of b.c or univ of calgary thus enabling myself to look for higher paycheck jobs. please advise if this strategy is correct?

Mr Salman Jan,
You´re going to have 6 kids?? I can´t believe it, I have 3 and they make me exercising all the time!! Your wife is an angel indeed. I salute her.
I believe if you a really hardworker and don´t care what kind of position of job you get (just think of making money as much as you can) for first couple months, you can live in any places in the entire country. I personally would live in a smaller sized city which has population about 80K-300K people. We can make enough money by working 2 jobs or maybe more but less living cost. Living in a big city is tiring us. The rent is huge (with smaller space), the insurance is unbelivebly expensive, higher crime (especially you have 6 kids), unfriendly community, so on...
If you have enough money to pay for school, you may think about getting a scholarship or maybe your employer offers an education reimbursement. It´s really a big help. I never live in Canada, but in my opinion is Canada is not much different from US.
GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR NEW LIFE IN CANADA!!!!
