Subject: To Sharon & All other experts: Spouse Sponsorship
  Dear All,

Could you please tell me how long does it typically takes to sponsor one´s spouse after landing in Canada ? Does one have to be physically living in Canada to sponsor their spouse ? My Spouse is on a student visa in USA and holds a Russian passport.

Thanks very much for your help!!!
best regards.

I would recommend to sponsor him from abroad , while he is in the U.S .You may sponsor him if you are Canadian citizen or a PR.
You can download the forms from www.cic.gc.ca.

Once you are approved as his sponsor , the CPC in Ontario will forward the PR application to the Visa office in charge of his location.

If he goes to Canada and you sponsor him from within , it?s a little risky thing to do. If for some reason the application doesn?t go through , you won?t have the right to appeal the decision and he may face a removal from Canada.
If he applies from abroad , it is safer and faster and he has the right to appeal in case something happen.

Cheers

Andy,

Thanks for your reply!

1) Could you please tell me how long does it typically take for the whole process to finish ? Does the fact that my spouse in in the US help in anyway to move things quickly ?

2) Currently I am also in the US but have gotten my PR. Can I sponser my spouse while I continue to live in US (for the 3 out of 5 year period)

thanks for your help!!
best regards

Sac, w/i Canada the processing time varies. I know of a case that went from 2001 to 2005 some others are faster. It depends on the information/support document that you send with your application. No-one not even calling CIC will give you that kind of information with precisely.

As a PR you can´t sponsor your spouse or anyone while you are residing outside Canada.

If money isn´t an issue I would rocomend in canada, He won´t be able to work until he gets aproval in priniple, but you´ll be together.

I wouldn´t be willing to live without my wife while CIC takes it´s time processing. How long is his visa valid? will the case need to forwarded to russa? How long is the russian back log? These are all questions you need ansers to before you make a decision. For example (after looking at the processing times) singapores average processing time is about the same as in canada processing.(to AIP, when you can get your sin and work)

There is more of a monitary risk as if he is rejected you can´t apeal. However you can reapply under humanitarian considerations.

I have to work now, sorry about the spelling and typo´s but I don´t have time to check it over.

The whole process might take between 4 to 16 months roughly.

You can sponsor him ONLY if you live in Canada as a PR you are not allowed to sponsor him from abroad.

Thanks guys!! (in reply to: To Sharon & All other experts: Spouse Sponsorship)
Thanks guys for your advice.

So is the "4 to 16 months" the typical time for sponsoring spouse from within canada or outside ?

Should my spouse´s file need to be reffered to Russia if she is in US all the time.

How can she get in Canada as an unsponsered wife of a permanent resident ? I heard that the CIC does not grant visas in such cases ?

Can she start her own application instead of waiting for me to get there and start her sponsership process ?

Can she get a work visa to Canada while her sponsorship/application is in process ?

many thanks for your help in advance!!
best regards,
Sac.

Can my husband apply for my PR card as soon as he reaches canada. what is the current processing time for the same and the documents required. What does the expiry date on the PR card certify.

Thanking you in advance.

I am going to apply under skilled worker immigration program from Pakistan. I am the principal applicant with my wife as a dependent. My question is do i have to pay the full application fee i.e 1100 canadian dollars along with application form or can i pay 550 dollars for my self and pay my wife´s fees some time later.

I would appreciate your early reply.
Thanks.
