Subject: FYI: Canadian weather
Since this has been discussed recently, here´s an article from today´s Globe and Mail:

Globe and Mail Update

"For sizzling summers head to New Brunswick, and for snow-seeking skiers, Quebec is the place to be. That´s according to new research by Environment Canada.

The agency carried out a study of the provinces and territories, using more than 30 years of data, to find out the best and worst provinces for weather. From this, they were able to compile 70 weather categories.

New Brunswick has the hottest summers and the sunniest winters, but the province still has the most smoke and haze days. While Newfoundland and Labrador have the most wet and snowy days. But Prince Rupert, B.C., is the wettest city in Canada.

And while Nova Scotia is the warmest province all year round, it still has the wettest and foggiest days. Nunavut has the coldest winters, with the windiest climate and most blowing snow days. But snow is most likely to fall in Quebec.

David Phillips, Environment Canada´s senior climatologist, explained how he conducted the study: ?I did a study two years ago into weather winners, comparing the 100 largest cities in Canada. This was huge success ? many people have used the site, even Hollywood used it to figure out where the best film locations were.

?I took cities, town and villages all distributed evenly. I came up with the 70 categories, and worked out who´s got the most sunny, foggy and rainy days.?

According to Mr. Phillips, those looking for the most comfortable weather need to travel to Alberta. And Manitoba has the clearest skies all year-round. But Saskatchewan is the sunniest province all year round.

Prince Edward Island has the most freezing rain days, but it´s not all bad because they also have the most humid summers.

?I looked at how tough the weather is in some places, then I saw who´s got the most sunshine and less rain and fog, this gave me the most comfortable province. Then I worked out who was the quintessential province, by places that weather-wise got a bit of everything.?

Ontario was found to be the province with the most variety of weather conditions all year-round, embodying the classic Canadian weather.

?The biggest surprise came out to be the ?warmest´ category, but that´s based on all year round. New Brunswick had the hottest summers ? but we always think of it as a foggy province. So some of these findings describe things we didn´t know about our continent.

?It is meant to satisfy curiosity, to be a conversation topic and help teachers in schools, it can also help people know where to go for health purposes.? Mr. Phillips also calculated the average climate in major cities ? he found Kamloops, B.C., to have the hottest summer, with Yellowknife to have the coldest winters.

So finally there´s a way to settle the continuing debate about who enjoys and endures the best and worst weather in Canada."

BUT, BUT, BUT... the statistics are for ALL of BC. you could not pay me to live in northern BC. It is cold!

Vancouver would give Nova Scotia a run for its money.

There was also an article in the Toronto Metro today that Ontario has a bit of everything, but nothing too extreme.

Ontario has the most thunderstorm though.

It was by David Phillips also.
