why do people have to be so damn rude just because a message may not be what YOU want to read?

Michelle, I can´t help you, and i´m sure someone in 3D animation could, but this board deals with immigration experiences. maybe you could check out some job sites via google canada?

Hi Michelle,

I don´t have a lot of information on 3D animation but you can check out Applied Arts Magazine website. They publish a Trade Magazine for art design in Canada.
http://www.appliedartsmag.com/careers/ontario_area.html

You can also check out the film schools in Canada eg the Vancouver Film School. Another Trade publication, Playback Magazine, publish a list of film school with contact information which is available at this website:
http://www.playbackmag.com/articles/magazine/20050214/list.html?print=yes

I hope this helps.

Hi Michelle,

Canada is the Mecca for 3D animation. I have a lot of experience in this and have worked on books and videos used to train people when I used work at the premier 3D software company in Toronto. There are lot of schools to learn...but be prepared to put in the hours. Competition is high and hours can be long. I dont know how old your husband is but many of the junior positions are filled by young people who have the stamina to last 15+ hours days. You have to be passionate for it! Games are the biggest industry growth area with Montreal and Vancouver being at the top.

Some places to start:

The best for school:
Sheriden (they have been around the longest and are very established)
Academy of Art and Design (more of business than a school)

As for employement... your husband will need a demo reel of some sort and he should specialize in an area of interest (ie Rendering, Animation, Modelling) if he wants to work at a place like EA sports in Vancouver considered by many as the holy grail of workplaces. Perks Galore!
Check out their site http://jobs.ea.com to get an idea of what a dream job in the idustry looks like and requires skillwise!
That said I have no idea of the quality of training in India in the use of such idustry standard software as Maya and 3D Max. I do know they do a lot of development there though. Not sure how this translates to training.

The key to a job is a strong Demo Reel...so learn the basics first....and that comes from watching everyday life very carefully and translating that into ones and zeros to make eye candy on the computer.

Hope that helps let me know how it goes.

that helps me too! thank you. Just read an article about Radical Entertainment. they are doing an employee search in London because they can´t find the skilled workforce locally in Vancouver. They have hired from Morocco and India in the past. The hard part is finding someone with 5-7 years experience. Another company mentioned is Mainframe. They admit they prefer local talent but there is simply not enough to fill the demand of the industry.

Thanks very much Close to the end for your informative note. Thats a lot of info I cud use. And Sharon thanks for mentioning that there is demand in this field. Demand leads to opportunities...

Thanks everybody - ejspet and Katrina (for those sites)

Close to the end - your introductory expression "Canada is the Mecca for 3D animation" sums it all for me.

Hi Sharon,

A lot of the bigger companies have comprehensive HR depts that recruit from all over the world. If you get a job with them all immigration is taken care of with minimal work on your part.
That said you MUST have some talent for this in order to get hired and that comes from hard work and a stellar demo reel (which everyone will want to see).

There is also a heavy technical side to this. Many games companies write proprietry code and are always looking for coders. Knowing C++ will get you far if your interested in this aspect.

One other thing....

The Academy Award Winner for Best Short Animation this year was from Toronto. His production "Ryan" was done using Maya and to make it, he recruited the help of 3D students from Sheriden.

In Canada, you can´t walk out the door without tripping over someone in 3D animation ;-)
