Subject: 5 Questions about Spousal Sponsorship
  Dear All,

I am landing in Canada on September 2005. I am then
getting married in US in October 2005. My would be
wife is in the US on a student Visa and she holds a
russian passport. She expects to complete her studies in
US by 2008-2009 time frame.

I had the following questions about spousal
sponsorship which I request you all to please address:

1) How long does it typically take to sponsor one´s
spouse (holding a russian passport)...
a) when the spouse is in the US (on student visa)
b) when the spouse is in Canada ?
c) which of the above two is more advisable ?

2) Since she is living in US would her file need to be transferred to Russia for some reason ?

3) Can my wife get a visitor visa to Canada when I am
living there as a permanent resident and her
sponsorship is still in process ? I have heard that
the CIC may not give here a visa in such a case.

4) Can my wife get a work visa to Canada when I am
living there as a permanent resident and her
sponsorship is still in process ?

5) Can my wife instead of being sponsered by me start
her own applcation for Canadian permanent residentship
so that she doesn´t have to wait for me to go there
and the start her sponsorship ?

Your answers will help me a lot in what decisions I
need to make in future. Thanks very much for your
help!

(in reply to: 5 Questions about Spousal Sponsorship)
1) From Buffalo, USA - Approx 8 to 17 months
From Moscow, Russia - Approx 5 to 9 months

2) No.

3) Very difficult but you can try.

4) She can get a work visa if she can get a job and the company is willing to apply for work permit

5) She can if she has the required points. From USA it is taking 18 to 34 months to complete the Skilled worker immigration. So it is not advisable in your case.
