Subject: Odd query about permanence in third country
Hi, I´ve been reading some of the posts at this forum and have an odd query. Many years ago, I went to the US to help a company from my country set up its offices there. Well, the day after I arrived, I spoke to a lawyer, to get information regarding my visa status (I was travelling on a business visa) and was informed that I could set up the office, but could not work, although I could use the computer to make business contacts. In any case, I was allowed to stay for a month. The same lawyer told me I should request an extension and, after that, she would initiate her work to regularise my status. Meanwhile, I should wait for the reply. It took four months for me to receive it and it turned out that the extension was refused. I was scared and thought I had to leave the country immediately (i.e., on the same day), but the lawyer told me I had about a week to leave the country. My boss wanted me to go to Mexico, stay a week and then go back to the US. I told him I was not comfortable with that situation, and, one week later, I was back home and quit my job. I only did what I did because I thought that was a bona-fide offer. I have visited the US several times, but have no interest in living there. I really want to immigrate to Canada and would not like to start on the wrong foot. I would like to know how to approach that issue while filling out my application. I wonder if this may pose a problem vis-?-vis my application to immigrate. Anyone had this sort of problem before (or know any similar case for that matter)? Thanks in advance.

This will not be an issue. On the background declaration form just mention that you were in US and the duration.

Thanks, Kenny, but what about my address and job status? I was an employee of this company who happened to stay in the US for four months (hence my address was there), but was paid in my own country (where I still kept my house). The company was set up there, but did not do any business (due to the advice from the lawyer), apart from purchasing office equipment and making business contacts.
