I think some of the best places to start researching are the local papers and even tourism sites. Check out WinnipegSun.com and tourism.winnipeg.mb.ca for general information. From those, you can find links to anything you might need, plus give you real insight into life in that city. Best of luck!

May be this will help you to some extent.

http://www.gov.mb.ca/

And the MB provincial immigration website at:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/labour/immigrate/

Regarding jobs in MB: please refer discussion at
http://www.canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=6729

Weather in MB is very severe - some time may be -40 to -48C windchill. At temperatures below -40C, exposed skin can freeze in a matter of minutes, so going about your daily activites becomes that much more difficult. You can track local weather conditions at: http://www.mymanitoba.com

Dont go by the temperature alone, check out the windchill - because of the prairie/ flat lands, there is nothing to block the winds and the wind blows pretty fiercely; so windchill becomes more extreme than the temperature suggests.

The same link http://www.mymanitoba.com also provides other local links, check them out at your convenience.

Weather apart, cost of living is much lower than in ON (from what I have read). People are very friendly, they have all said Welcome to MB. Health Insurance is available from Day1 and doesnt cost anything. Winnipeg city is small so commuting is not really a hassle (except on bad weather days) - as an example we are in Winnipeg at one extreme outskirt of the city, yet to go to the city centre is just a 20 min drive in summer. Car insurance is also lower if someone has a good driving record in the US/ Canada.

Hope the above helps.

This is based on some limited experience in Winnipeg.

Doctors/ Healthcare: There is a strong demand for doctors/ pediatricians/ healthcare workers in Winnipeg and the rest of MB.
Teachers: Early childhood educators, preschool, and Kindergarten teachers are in demand

Security: Police Forces are recruiting heavily - there is a strong preference for knowing atleast one other language.

Retail: Retail stores and outlets are hiring actively - but these are (typically) low level jobs paying about $8 to 12 per hour

Agricultural: Since the economy is mainly agricultural there is a good scope for people with this background

Veterinary: Same as agricultural

IT: Some demand for Internet/Java consultants and apparently one of the Big5 is doing an SAP project in Winnipeg (havent been able to find out for what client).
Most of internet development is for internet (mail order) pharmacies (to the US) and billpayment solutions. Desktop support and Systems Administrator roles are also available.

Accounts: Accounts and book-keeping positions are seen often in the media.

Mechanical: Automobile engineering and mechanical engineering related to farm equipment (tractors, etc) are in good demand.

Again this is based on somebodies limited experience in Winnipeg over the past 4 months and on the discussions I have had with recruiting agencies here.

Winnipeg is certainly urban with a population of about 700,000 but it is a relatively small city. The area surrounding Winnipeg is rural and lot of small farmers/ ranches etc. More than half the population of Manitoba lives in Winnipeg and we are just one hours drive (100km) from the US border of North Dakota. Winnipeg is also the geographic centre of North America and is the closest Canadian city to Mexico.

Most of the farm equipment manufacturing companies are small scale in nature and supply small parts and components to Caterpillar and John Deere in the US. There is one large bus manufacturing company (New Flyer) headquartered here (www.newflyer.com) which supplies rapid transit buses to US and Canada.

For the SAP opportunity, if you check on monster.ca you will see some ads for SAP consultants in Winnipeg.

However, if you manage business credit cards wisely, you can maximize the 21 to 25 days grace period or float on purchases. When the statement comes and you pay off the entire balance, you will actually avoid paying any interest. The crux of the matter is that you get a 25-day interest free loan! Not badand only from business credit cards.
