Subject: Working and then eventually immigrating to Canada
I hope this makes sense to someone and I can get some good sound advice. I am not looking for free legal advice; please know that?.just some direction.
I am a 47 year old US citizen. I am currently legally married, but we have been separated for over three years now, but not legally. Due to insurance and laziness, I have never pulled the trigger on the divorce, but I am going to soon. I have three grown children (16, 17, & 19)
I desire to relocate to Ontario Canada. When I go, I will go ALONE. The children will stay with their mother as they finish their schooling and college.
I have read enough over the past year to understand the requirements of the Skilled Worker Program. I am in the final months of completing my degree and when I do, I will have in excess of the 67 points required under this program. (My degree completion is early February 2006.)
I also have read in the official web site of the Canadian government over Immigration that there is a Temporary Work Permit that can be gotten if a job offer is made first. I have read and understand the employer?s requirements and mine as well, so I do not need help with that.
But my questions are these:
1. If a Canadian company offers me a job, can I work (and obviously live) in Canada using this temporary work permit? I have not read so, but will anything else be required of me?
2. If it is possible, if I did and was able to work in Canada using the temporary work permit, can I also at the same time, when I am eligible, apply under the Skilled Worked program so I can permanently live and work in Canada as a legal resident? (And one day, even apply for citizenship?.but one step at a time, I know!)
3. And finally, regardless of the work permit issue, since I am close to finishing my degree, can I apply under the Skilled Worker program before I have completed it, knowing that the process will most likely take several months anyway and by then I will have completed my degree? Or will that just complicate things and I would be better off waiting until February?

This is so important to me. I hope I can get someone to give me some clear answers, or is able to direct me to a government official or office where I can get some clear direction.
Thank you!!!

Sean

yep, you can, however, before you work in Canada, you have to use the offer to apply work permit, I believe there is some advantage for U.S citizen who benefit under NAFATA (even though I personally think NAFTA is a joke, since U.S didn´t give a shit towards NAFTA ruling on soft lumber)

yep, skilled worker takes way helll long time, you might consider Provincial Norminate Program once you get hire .

yep, of course, as long as you pass 67 points, they also consider your work experience before or during college.

use this to see if you are qualified to apply.

One question for you, why you wanna immigrate to a new country, consider you have already lived in U.S for 47 years

thank you (in reply to: Working and then eventually immigrating to Canada)
I was going to put that in my message, but I took it out. Of course there is a woman involved. I have known her for five years and our relationship is hard to describe to anyone outside the two of us....but I am deeply in love with her. It is reaching a point where I can´t wait too much longer. This is of GREAT importance to me.
I do not want to wonder 20 years from now, "What if!?!?"
Thanks for the help!

good for you! (in reply to: Working and then eventually immigrating to Canada)
Sean-
It´s nice to know that there is someone out there who is in the same boat! I am a US citizen, trying to get my temp.work permit for the same reasons as you...a new person in my life! I have already quit my job in the US to come to Canada to find a company that would sponsor, but so far, it´s been very tough. I would have already had a huge number of jobs, if my paper work were already processed. But, unfortunately, companies do not like the idea of having to wait for an outcome that may or may not be positive. Nonetheless, good luck with your search!

Thank you Mary (in reply to: Working and then eventually immigrating to Canada)
Thank you Mary!!!!
It is small unseen kindnesses that mean the world to me and you just delivered one to me. You will never realize what an encouragement your message has been to me.
I wanted to tell ?Anonymous? that my life is my life. I am not looking to judge any one...ever. It is not my job to do that. I wish they would not judge me.
I am so desperately in love with this woman and if this had only been a few months into this relationship, then I could see the ?logic? or common sense to wait longer. But we have been in this for five years and I need to be with her.
Do you have any tips, thoughts, ideas that might help me? I cannot go to Canada until I have either secured a position first, or completed the Skilled Worker program. I just want to get the ball rolling.
DO you (or anyone for that matter) know what the Employer has to go through to sponsor someone? I have been to the CIC website
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/employer-1.html
and it does not really go into what ?effort? is required by the employer. I would love to be able to explain in greater, clearer detail to prospective employers what they could expect, but since I do not know myself, then it is hard to do. (Alleviate their fears so to speak.) I have had several phone interviews, but I think they do not want the ?hassle? if they can find someone else.
Thanks again for the reply and the good attitude. I wish you well in your efforts! I wish we could stay in touch to see how we both make out!
Sean
