Subject: Landing through US border
Do I have to fly directly to Canada from my own country? If I plan to visit my friend in Seattle first and drive to Vancourver, can I also have the landing clearance at the border? Normally, how long will that take?

Appreciated for your help

U can make entry from whichever post. Canada does not care. Only not Quebec region.

Make sure you have a US visa though.

Hi Nina.

Activating your permanent residence visa (i.e., "landing"), through a Port of Entry (POE) does not take long - maybe 5 minutes (after getting through whatever line-up there may be). What may take longer is the process of clearing Canada Customs (keep in mind that immigration is for people; customs is for goods).

If you plan to bring any personal effects into Canada (regardless of whether or not they are in your possession at the time of landing), you have only one chance to declare ALL of these things, or they may be subject to duties and taxes upon their subsequent import. What I recommend you do is to take a list of goods to be imported with you. Better yet, download and complete CCRA´s (Canada Custom and Revenue Agency´s) corresponding forms prior to leaving your country for Canada. You can get these from the gov of Canada, or, for your convenience, I´ve uploaded copies on to www.e-ca.ca:

Have a nice day
