Subject: better way of getting a job
  Hi,
i have a masters in EE from US and have about 2 yrs of work experience. Once i land in canada i may or may not not find a job immediately in my area, i.e, IC design. so is it a safe bet to get into a grad school, get a second masters and build contacts during that period, as that way i am doing something useful, if i manage to get a job within that period i will become part-time student.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

i´m in the same boat (MSEE in US) and was thinking the same thing. i was thinking to get a degree in something different altogether since the engineers i´ve contacted from PEO site said that engineering is saturated in canada.

btw, where did you get your experience??

Hi,
i have worked for a yr in the US and a yr in india.
i was thinking about what you said. finding a job in engg is difficult as all the prime jobs are getting shipped to india, china. unless you have a lot of experience it may not be that easy. all said and done nothing can be generalized. if you can get into petroleum engg or something like that, i think you have a chance.

are you working in the US.

good luck

Degen95, Anand

I am in the same boat as you guys (MSEE from US).

Degen, what is your area in EE? What other fields are you thinking about?
where in Canada are you guys going to?

I am in in power systems. do you think there are any internships or oppertunities for Canadian experience?

Thanks for your opinion.

guys,

i´m in power systems. i did research for the last 2 years but my contract is up and i´m awaiting canadian PR. i estimate that i should have it be this time next year given that i applied last october.

there is a professional engineers of ontario site with a forum and i have been in contact with some engineers there and they have assured me that the market is saturated with engineers there, and combine this with the fact that more immigrants are coming and canadian schools are graduating engineers as well.

personally, i was thinking of going back to school to do some additional certification or even technician training in power plant operation or something similar so i can take the "back door" into the industry. the only problem is that no one will take me seriously as a technician since i have an MSEE already.

my ultimate goal is to stay in technology/science in some capacity since i think that is where my skills are. but, as you and i both realize now, it is of utmost importance to have CANADIAN education/certificates/contacts even though we studied in the US.

degen 95,
that´s true. it is better to get back to school and get a canadian degree, and that way you´l have an access to their job fairs. if you can go to a very good school like U OF Toronto or waterloo i guess we have a good chance.

can we apply to a gradschool right now (when your PR is in the process), would appreciate if you could give some info on that.

good luck

i thought of that but if you apply to school BEFORE the PR is issued, you will be assessed as an international student. you have to wait until PR is granted. the good thing is that once you are a PR is easy to get into school since the deadlines for applications are pretty late whereas for international students, you have to apply several months ahead since you need the student visa.
