Arranged employment (in reply to: employment arrangement...how does it work?)
Hi.

You can apply for a work permit whilst waiting for PR, but in order to be considered for Arranged Employment, you must include the necessary documents (e.g., HRSDC confirmation) with your SW application at its time of submission. In other words, if you need the extra points (and/or the requirement for sufficient settlement funds to be waived), you must obtain and confirm an offer of indeterminant, full-time employment, within a Designated Occupation (for which your skills match), prior to considering a Skilled Worker application.

Now here´s the kicker - most Canadian employers will not consider hiring foreign nationals without status in Canada, as there are (typically) enough locals to fill the vacancies. However, if you have a unique skill set (particularly if you are in the IT industry), and/or a friend (or family member, friend of family member, etc) in a position to offer you arranged employment in Canada, then you may be one of the (very) lucky few who are able to make such arrangements.

More likely, this option of arranged employment is nothing more than a pipe dream, and you would be better off improving your score through some other means (e.g., improving your language skills, upgrading your education, etc), and/or increasing your net worth (please keep in mind that home equity, in many cases, can be considered when assessing one´s available settlement funds), rather than chasing this dream (sorry).

Conversely, if you do have a desirable skill set that´s in demand in on one or two provinces, you may want to consider planning a trip here for the purposes of seeking an offer of employment. For instance, I know of a Java script programmer (the boyfriend of a previous client) who, while visiting his grilfriend here in Calgary, was offered full-time employment two days into his visitor´s visa! Needless to say, he thinks Canadian immigration is a snap (LOL)... Furthermore, the oil and gas industry in Alberta is always lloking for drillers, engineers, etc.

I also know there are a couple of immigration services that have prospective employers lined-up for arranged employment, but only in very small numbers (and in a limited variety of occupations). I also know that they charge very dearly for these services (i.e. $5,000 USD is not uncommon).

Having said all that, you probably know that I work with a law firm (Crarer Law Office, in Calgary AB), which offers Canadian immigration legal services. But beyond that, I, too, know of a few businesses that are desperate for skilled workers. Specifically, I may be able to help one or two people find work in Canada who are trained and experienced welders, as well as those who are opthalmic technicians. There is also a chance of finding employment for a few lang-haul truck drivers. So, if you happen to be one of these things, feel free to drop me a line or two, and include your resume (a.k.a. C.V.).

I know it´s not much, but I hope this helps.

Regards,
Dennis

Sorry - that´s "long-haul truck drivers" - not "lang-haul".

thanks dennis for your helpful infos. i have 2 areas of skills and degree; field of architecture & design and business management. but i have more experiences at the last one. if my employer has a sister company in canada and they´re willing to offer me a somekind of arrangement to work there, is it possible for me to get a temporary work permit from immigration asap?
my us visa is almost expired sometime next year and i have 3 kids with me, so i don´t want to mess up everything by being illegal aliens even for few months. i hope CIC will approve my SW application summer 2006, but we never know the exact approval time they make.
i paid us$3500 to a law firm for canada PR (but we realized that it was a failure to hire a US lawyer, that was a big mistake!). they can´t do as much as canadian law firm do. that was my first mess.
anyway, thanks for your advices.
