Subject: How should i do this...
I´m moving from the US to Canada to stay with my bf (who is a citizen). I´m just wondering what i need to do? Do i still need to get an immigration VISA? Proof of Funds? How do i get a job? Do i need to replace my Social Security Number and get a Social Insurance Number?

Congratulations on a big decision! Getting your Canadian PR (permanent residency) is a long process; the best place to start is to go to www.cic.gc.ca. That´s the official website of Canadian Immigration and Citizenship. The entire process from the US is taking at least 2 years right now (sorry to break the news!), but this is a fantastic forum with tons of great information and supportive people. Anyone here will be happy to answer specific questions as they are able. Best of luck to you!

Well, it´s just not that easy, LOL.

You can go and stay with im for up to 6 months, and you don´t need a visitor visa, but if you plan to stay beyond 6 months you will need PR (permanent residency). You can´t work in Canada (or get provincial healthcare) unless you´re a permanent resident. If you stay beyond the 6 months without a PR card, you may never be allowed back into Canada again. So, don´t do that.

There´s a number of ways you can do this, but if you live with him in Canada for 6 months, then dutifully return to the US, you can try filing a common-law application, under the Family Class category. Not sure if 6 months is enough time to initiate a common-law application or not. You could also file as conjugal partners, but don´t get your hopes up on being approved for that. The best bet (if you´re both ready) would be to marry him then apply under spousal.

With any of the above, you could apply from outside Canada. Your visa would be processed in Buffalo. Or, you could do an inland application, where you would be permitted to stay in Canada while your application is being processed. The catch to that is your partner has no appeal rights under that class, should you be declined. You also shouldn´t leave the country during the processing time or you will risk not being let back in.

Other options may include a work or study permit, or if you qualify for the skilled worker´s class, but those tend to take longer to process and you need so many ´points´ to qualify.

inland application is the best option you have if you really want to live in Canada with your bf. Go to Canada first, spend sometime with him and see if how it feels like living in Canada. You will learn by yourself if what you can do. So forget about anything right now. Just go there and see if how can you adjust in a different country. You will find lots of people and forums like this to get information for PR. GOOD LUCK

two years? why would CIC put that it´s taking 7 months on the website if it´s really two years?

wow, thanks for the fast response! Didn´t realize how active and helpful this forum is, glad i found it!

I was hoping for the ´inland application.´ But can i get a job somehow in the meantime while my application is processed?

My plan was similar to Steve... to come up here, spend some time, and start the inland application. But how likely am i going to get PR before having to leave Canada? I will literally be leaving my life in the US to start one in Canada, and i do not want to leave Canada in 6 months to start all over in the US again.

Also, are there agencies or lawyers in Canada that can help or speed up this process?

The most important issue for me is being able to work in Canada.

To process common-law or conjugal you need to be together for at least a year. From what i´ve been reading on forums conjugal is a fairly risky route. If there is nothing stopping you from getting married they may determine it is a relationship of convenience.

No you can?t speed up the process. The processing time of 2 years is for Skilled worker class not family class. With family class you can expect 7 months to Approval in principle.

My suggestion is that you try and get a Canadian work permit before you go to canada. Then you can work while you process an in canada family class immigration. This may not be that easy to do, but it is the only way I can think of that would let you work while you process your application.

I read about the work permit... i can fill out an app at a point of entry? How long does it take to get one? I only found out the price, but not how long it would take.

And is it possible to get a work permit if i don´t have any specific skills, and don´t have a job offer yet?
