Subject: Relocating to Canada.
Hello everyone. I have been with my boyfriend for almost 6 years. I am American and he is Canadian (but he obtained dual-citizenship on his own due to living close to the border and wanting options for finding work). We plan on marrying (maybe sometime mid-late next year). We see each other about 2-3 times per week (depending on his work schedule) and we have tons of proof that we are in a very serious relationship. Although we live separately (no joint bills, leases, etc.) we plan on opening a bank account together soon.

Although the plan was to live in the States, his grandmother´s home maybe given to us and we have been researching relocating to Canada. Can anyone tell us what they would do in this situation?

At first I was interested in the conjugal status, but after reading so many negatives about and having to prove why we can´t get married right now I´m not so sure about that. And we are not common-law since we’ve never lived together so we would love to get some of your input.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The second paragraph should say:

Although the plan was to live in the States, his grandmother´s home maybe given to us and we have been researching *ME* relocating to Canada. Can anyone tell us what they would do in this situation?

Since you plan on getting married late next year - you can annouce yourself engaged to be married after a six year relationship.

You can either apply now with that status (engaged) or
wait till married and then apply.

Canadian Immigration does not have an option for engaged applicants, sorry Starwars, that option no longer exist. The options for spouses are common law spouses, conjugal partners or spouses. As Sunni mentioned she can not file as common law as they have not lived together for one-year or more. Conjugal partners are used if there is a reason why you can´t get married and you will have to provide evidence to prove your case, a lot of evidence.

Once you are married you can submit an application while you both live together either in Canada or the US. Or you can continue to reside in the US while he resides in Canada submit an external application for spousal sponsorship. You can get further information from the immigration website at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/index.html
