Subject: Winnipeg or London or other low cost of living??
  Hi there,

My chosen city in my application is Winnipeg (don´t ask why haha). However, I still want to consider other places. Having 5 children, a city with low cost of living might be the one for me. Please share your knowledge on Winnipeg, London and other low cost of living cities as well better chances of landing an IT job. THANKS.

Hi Joe05, I think I´ve told you a little bit about London, that it´s very kid friendly and homey. I´ve heard great things about living in Winnipeg, too, so they are probably both good choices. But they are pretty different in that Winnipeg is a big city far away from much other "stuff" (urban type stuff, anyway), and London is a smaller city closer to other "stuff" (the big cities of Toronto and Detroit, of course, as well as the general population of southern Ontario and all which that provides. Plus Lakes Ontario, Huron, and Erie are very close for recreational offerings). The climates are very different, too; Winnipeg being much more extreme in both heat and cold, but London having more humidity in the summer. I don´t know if these things matter much to you, just thought I´d point it out.

We are going through a similar dilemma, trying to figure out the "best´ place for us between two very different places (Kitchener-Waterloo area or Halifax). There´s so much to consider, and I´m wishing you the best of luck in figuring it out for you and your family. :)

I forgot to mention that Kitchener-Waterloo (an hour or so east of London) has lots of IT opportunites. I don´t know your specialty, but from our research into the area, we´re finding lots of IT companies there, including Research in Motion (makers of Blackberry). Cost of living in the K-W area seems reasonable too, equivalent to the US midwest, and it´s a beautiful area, surrounded by Mennonite farms yet only an hour or so west of Toronto. I hope this is helpful to you in some way.

Wannabecanadian,

Thanks a lot. Yeah I remember your post about London and that´s what made me consider London.

Thank you really...Kitchener-Waterloo sounds like a great choice too..reasonable cost of living and yet great IT opportunities. I´ll research more on that.

Winnipeg weather is what´s stopping me really. I am okay with snow, we can tolerate few degrees below freezing but I don´t know how much we can handle. It looks like a great city though.

Thanks again...your posts are really helpful...goodluck to your choice too.
