Ok ppl thanx a lot, now i know that IA stands for initial assessment. But can n e one explain please what it is. Is it a letter or is it that my file has been received. What exactly is it. Again, I am new at this. Thanx a lot..

IA means someone has actually read your file beginning to end and has assessed your information - positively or negatively.
at that point they decide what additional information they might want to see, they decide if there is any benefit to an interview etc.

Hi Mirza...IA (Initial Assessment) is a letter coming from CIC where you applied. It basically contains CIC´s initial findings on your application. More or less IA can contain information on the following:
a. Interview waived or interview required
- if interview required, IA should also say what CIC office will interview you.
b. Request for additional docs
If you applied in Buffalo, IA letter will also come together with the medical forms and instructions. If your interview will be waived, you can go ahead with the medicals. If you will be required to attend an interview, you need to wait for your interview date before you do your medicals. Also, if you applied in Buffalo, IA will tell you which CIC office will your files be transferred....hope this helps....=)

IA can be expected to arrive between 8 to 9 months from AOR date...no assurance though....and this is if you are a Buffalo applicant outside of Canada. No idea about in-Canada or other CIC office.
AOR date is the date when CIC assigned a file number for you.

IA timelines vary from visa office to another and from class to another, for federal skilled workers (the most common) currently it´s from 4-60 months depending on visa office, for buffalo currently its 16-20 months.
