Subject: Moving from Sweden to Canada to be with fianc?...
I`m (canadian) currently in Sweden with my boyfriend (Swede)to visit him for one month. We would like to be together on a more permanent basis... Therefore we have decided that he should move to me in Canada. We have known each other for 2 years and he has visited me in Canada several times.

Our questions are ... what is the easiest and fastest way to procede with the immigration.. marriage (in Canada ? or in Sweden before I leave...) or fianc? sponsorship or other way ????... Can he work/be in Canada while we are waiting for all the papers work to go through ...

Hi Rille.

The short answer is to marry him within the country, and apply immediately thereafter. However, this may not be what´s best for the two of you, as your new husband will not be able to work or go to school for at least four to six months after applying.

Conversely, many newly-wedded couples avoid this by getting married (where, does not matter), and then return to their respective countries, homes, jobs, and lifestyles whilst the application is processed. Typically, these slightly different applications take a little longer to process (i.e. eight to twelve months), but in the end, it can be less stressful.

One more thing - I won´t go into details on the Family Class sponsorship available for common-law couples (as per your posting, I doubt you two have cohabited for one full year while in a conjugal relationship), but you may meet the requirements for sponsorship as a conjugal couple. See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/fc.html for more details.

Hi Rille!

Where are you in Sweden? I"m also Canadian, living in Sweden, but with my Swiss boyfriend, and we are moving back to Canada after the summer, but I´m sponsoring him as my common-law spouse. We´ve been together 7 years...

Just wanted to say hi! I live in Stockholm, by the way...
