Subject: divorce & Canadian citizenship
Hi - I have a question I hope someone can answer. I´m from the U.S. and married a Canadian 5 years ago. We lived down there until summer 2002, when we moved to Canada. I became a permanent resident in April 2003.

Well, now we´re talking about divorce. I´ve made a home here, and I want to stay. I know I can´t apply for citizenship until I´ve been here for three years, so I can´t even apply until May 2005. If we get divorced before that time, will I still be able to apply for citizenship? I can´t find anything about this on the CIC site, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Frankie

Divorce after PR but before CC (in reply to: divorce & Canadian citizenship)
Hi Frankie.

Under normal circumstances, your divorce after obtaining permanent residence will not adversely affect your immigration status in Canada, nor will it adversely affect your application for Canadian citizenship.

from the date of his landing, he needs to spend 2 years out of 5 living in Canada to maintain his status.

he is free to divorce his wife and this will not affect his status.

how would you prove it? I am afraid the only thing you can do is get a divorce, hope she does not go to the government for support while you are still involved with the sponsorship undertaking and chalk the whole thing up to a bad decision.

Divorce & Citizenship (in reply to: divorce & Canadian citizenship)
Hi,
My wife and I are planning to get a divorce. Both of us are permanent residents in Canada and are expecting our citizenship in the next few months.
Would the process of applying and getting a divorce delay our citizenship? Of would we have to inform the Government that we are getting a divorce?
Really appreciate your response.
Thanks

Hi, me and my husband are planning to get a divorce. I have been living in Edmonton for more than 4 years and I have my PR card and will be expired next year. I submitted my citizenship application form last Aug and still waiting for the test. I´m wondering would that affect my process if I change my status and can I still live in here with my boys?

Appreciate with your responds, thanks!
