Subject: Trying to immigrate to Canada as a US Citizen
I am 20 and my girlfriend is a canadian citizen and I am an US citizen.. we have been planning on my moving to Canada however I am unsure how I will be able to get a job and remain there. From what I understand to get a work permit I have to have a job offer before I go to Canada and once the job is done I have to leave, this is not what i´m looking for. I do not have any education past high school, I have been working for about 5 years now in a retail sales position and also in charge of shipping for the same company, I also owned my own business which was started in March of this year, however is not an active business at this time, as far as I can tell neither of these positions qualify as a "skilled worker" so what other options do I have? I have thought about applying for schooling there, that would be earn me a study visa which allows me to get a job as well however i´m not sure what my chances of being accepted are or if a could get a job that would even pay for it. If anyone here has gone through the immigration process and doesn´t mind helping I would surely appreciate it.

thought I would add, after reading a few posts by others, a work permit may not be such a bad idea? however do I still need to qualify as a skilled worker for it? so confused... :(

a work permit is designed for those positions that cannot be filled by Canadian workers. I do not think this idea would work for the kind of job you are looking for.

the only option I see available to you is for you and your girlfriend to get married and have her sponsor you. While this sounds really simple... it is not and there are very significant legal responsibilites that your girlfriend would undertake for a significant amount of time.

if your been living with your girlfriend for at least 12 months, she can still sponser you without getting married. as stated this is the only option you have, the family class, unless you can apply as a bussiness, but again you will face the same problem as SW, it will take very long time these days (no sooner than 2 years)
good luck

So if I went there on a student visa, meaning I am going to school, that allows me to get a job yes? However I assume the chances of financial aid is minimal to none? Sorry to bug you all with this, just trying to figure out how I will be able to make this work, my girlfriend will not be able to meet the requirments for sponsorship for family class immigration. Just to clarify, you have to either be a citizen or on a work permit to legally work in Canada?

if you or her have no dependents, the qualifications for sponsoring a spouse are much less extensive. she wouldn´t have to meet the Low Income Cut Off, excessive medical demands etc wouldn´t be an issue.

read through the outside canada spousal sponsorship application guide and the inland. tho inland, you couldn´t work without above mentioned work permits/etc.

once you receive approval in principal tho, you could get a SIN and be able to work.

do you know the CIC site? www.cic.gc.ca and go to sponsorship applications and read through the spouse/common-law/conjugal guide. but the best route is spouse tho you must still have tons of proof and evidence of a genuine relationship.

hope this helps

i´m not sure, but I think it may only count against you if YOU have dependents coming with you. I´m not sure her children would hinder you at all...
