Subject: Language Proficiency test
Hi there, Thanks for putting up a wonderful discussion forum like this to address immigration issues. My question is that I´m a professional, educated in English and basically, very fluent in English. I put in my application and now I´m requested to go for a "Language Proficiency Test" at some authorized place. So, my question is - how does the Canadian Immigration Officer come to a decision as to a person´s language fluency? Appreciate any response. Thank you

Language assessment (in reply to: Language Proficiency test)
Hello.

For applicants who have chosen to submit "other written evidence" in lieu of English language testing results (i.e. IELTS or CELPIP,)Canadian visa officer use the Canadian Language Benchmarks 2000 as a tool to assess the evidence submitted(see http://www.e-ca.ca/definitions.htm#CLB for further details).

For applicants who have chosen to submit "other written evidence" in lieu of French language testing results (i.e. TEF), Canadian visa officer use the Standards Linguistiques Canadiens 2002 as a tool to assess the evidence submitted(see http://www.e-ca.ca/definitions.htm#SLC for further details).

In most cases I have seen, applicants whose native language is neither English nor French make a serious error in their application when they elect to submit written evidence over testing. Had you hired my services, it is very likely that I would have advised you to undergo testing, or, to compile an exhaustive list of documents that prove your language proficiency meets benchmark standards.

Sincerely,

My native language is English and I have studied Dentistry in English and lived in Britain for 5 years. Will I be able to cliam all 16 points based on this alone or will I have to provide further proof and what would that proof be apart from the letter.

Ielts Score or Other documents (in reply to: Language Proficiency test)
Hi, I am an Indian national Working in England for the last three years. I applied for Canadian skilled worker class immigration in year 2005 from india. At that time i submitted my Original ielts score card with the application. The ielts score card was exactly one year old when i applied to the canadian Embassy in India. The situation now is that i have received a leter from Canadian high commision in India in which they are saying to update the documents i have submitted and include any new documents i wish to process with the application within 90 days.My question is : Do I have to retake the IELT and submit the score card again or I can submit Documents proving that i have been working in English Country( England) for the last three years to achieve "English language marks" in my application.
Please advise?
Thanks

If the IELTS test was taken within a year of filling the application, you should be ok. You can send addition documents if you like. However, if the CIC officer thinks he/she wants you to take IELTS again, your application processing will be delayed.

Thus, the question you want to ask yourself, are you willing to take the risk of getting your application delayed? If so, what you are suggesting is fine and may work. If not, take the IELTS test again.

TOEFL (in reply to: Language Proficiency test)
Hi, I have a TOEFL iBT certificate 92. Just want to know if I should take an IELTS exam to proceed with my skilled worker application. Is a TOEFL accredited for such an application or I must sit an IELTS exam?
Thank,
Reza
