Hi,

It depends upon the visa officer who will review your case. There´s no clear-cut policy about who should take IELTS or who should not. I have read cases here about people with masters etc but still were required to take the test...my own case, I don´t have any masters but the visa officer accepted my English ability explanation...so nobody here can really answer your question with some degree of certainty....goodluck

If you didn´t go to school as a child in English and don´t have English parents or a long English background, yes, you need to do it. Saying you have a Master´s degree in English doesn´t mean anything because the standard of English of some foreign students is terrible (no offence intended). They will almost definitely ask for it in these post 9/11 thorough checking times.

Hi HR: I did not do my IELTS but I downloaded the Canadian Language Benchmarks document and sort of followed that to prove my English Language Skills. I wrote in depth letters myself and got them signed from work and school (sometimes as long as 8 pages) proving my reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Check this out http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-3.html

Click on your proficiency level and give examples of each point in your letters. I claimed high proficiency but I´m not sure if the visa officer agrees unless I order my CAIPS. I wasn´t asked to do the IELTS however. If you´re determined not to do the test then get letters from your work and school. I wrote the letters myself and got them signed by an HR personnel at work and a professor at my school.

Thank you all.
Candice, yes, I wrote a 5 page letter proving my english proficiency, the idea of getting it signed is a good idea, Let me do that.

Do you think I will get some sample letters or get the format to compare my letter ?

I can send you one of mine. I´ll have to scan it though since I dont have an electronic copy anywhere. Silly me! If you provide me with your email address, I can email one to you. I just want to clarify that I wrote three letters. One was from work (on company letterhead) - I wrote it but I made it seem as if the person from HR wrote it, with her name and signature at the bottom. One was from school (school letterhead) - I wrote this one as well but my Professor signed it. And the last letter was from myself stating my background in English. Give me your email address and I can send you the one from my work.

If claiming full points in English is critical I would recommend taking IELTS, you may get away without it but IELTS may save you several monhts of wait later, if the officer decided to ask you to take it or for an interview.

Thank you Candice, if you can send me your letters, that would be great and I really appreciate.
My email id is

I had a typo.I am soorry I said, my letter was 5 pages, no it was only two pages. And your idea of getting a letter from my company, on a letter head, that is a very good idea. I am going to do that also. If you can send me the letters you have sent them, would be great.

thank you
