Subject: Immigrating from US as a SK,
I am a citizen of Colombia and I came to the US on 2001, I applied for asylum, but that case has not been approved and I am very tired of the process and the hostile environment towards immigrants in some parts of the country. I am a System Engineer graduated in Colombia, I finished a MS in computer science from a top 20 university in US, also I´m a certified Java programmer and Java developer, and I have been accepted for the MBA program at Northwestern university beginning next spring, I´ve been working as a software developer for the last two years, I worked as graphic designer while I was studying and at the same time I tutored undergraduate students as a volunteer. My wife is a dentist and she has worked as dental assistant and studying for the NDBE during the time we have been here.
Until this week I did not know about the options to immigrate to Canada and New Zealand, I score 77 points on the assessment test; I think we could save the 12000 in the next six months.

We really like to immigrate to Canada, but do not know if we can still apply without leave the US and while we are in the asylum process.

Also I would like to know if the SK PR process is based on the points or is based on first come, first serve?

If you have legal status in the US you can apply from Buffalo, that´s the Info you can find at the CIC website. But it takes too long to apply from Buffalo. Unless you want to apply from Bogot?, but, if you´re asking asylum in the US, I don´t think you want to go there.

Based on my knowledge you can apply if you are legal or illegal as long as you have been in US legally for atleast one year in the past.

Its based on points system but processed based on first come first serve.

BTW, how did you get into northwestern? wats ur gmat/experience?

GMAT 720

Experience
2 years as High school math and physics teacher (Colombia)
1 year as Systems Analyst (Colombia)
2 years Assistant Manager Art Department (US)
1 year Systems Engineer (US)

Volunteer Work
2 years as unpaid Teaching Assistant at Universidad Del Valle. School of Systems Engineering (Colombia)
1 year as CTI Tutor (US)
Salvation Army (Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner for less fortunate US)

Education
BS Systems Engineering (Colombia)
MS Computer Science (US)
SCJP for java 1.5 and SCJD for java 2

It did help a lot the GMAT score, but also is the way you present your case(volunteer work, education, in my case I made clear the fact that I have experience in a different country, that I can communicate in two languages, actually I consider my english as not good, but it seems ok for schools in the US)and very important recommendation letters. I think anyone that wants and have some work experience and GMAT over 695 should apply to the school she or he wants.

I do have another question, is not clear to me if the proof of funds must be shown at the time of the application or when one is at the border point?

The proof of funds will be requested in the Initial Assesment, That´s about 9 to 12 months after you received AOR (Acknowledge of Receipt) from the visa post where you submitted your application.

You can probably apply, but I PROMISE you that your wife will not be able to practice as a dentist in Canada. They don´t recognise ANY foreign dentistry qualifications soshe would have to begin study again from the beginning. Or is she a dental assistant? It was a bit unclear from your msg. I know someone from the UK who came here as a dentist with 20 years´ experience and he had to pay $20000 to begin again. Just a word of warning...

VJ - Dentist practicing in Canada - US (in reply to: Immigrating from US as a SK,)
Hey VJ, my wife is a foreign graduate dentist, there is a program offered at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) and University of Miami, I do not remember the name but is two years long and its goal is to certify foreign graduate dentist (even American and Canadian people that got their degrees outside North America), I know that Western Ontario has the same program in Canada.

Also if a foreign graduate dentist got into a residency (Periodontics, Orthodontics, OMS, etc) in US or Canada she or he will be recognized on his or her speciality in both countries, is not easy, because they need to take the NDBE I and II, and be in the same competition with people graduate in north america, but is not impossible.

Does anyone know how different is the weather between Toronto and Chicago?
