| Subject: How important are French skills? |

Greetings all,
How widespread is the use of French in Canada, outside of Quebec? For example, in Toronto or Vancouver, would skill in French significantly enhance one´s employability and/or general ease of living? Since most would-be immigrants are shooting for English proficiency, I am doubting if knowledge of French is important at all for living and working in Canada.

It´s becoming more important to the Federal government, so having French can help when applying with them. However, the private sector in Western Canada really does not give it much merit.
Actually, in Vancouver, it´s probably more important to have Cantonese or Mandarin...

Only in Quebec/East coast. Maybe Toronto. Vancouver area? No, unless you want to put your kids into French speaking schools, which are free, by the way.

New Brunswick is officially bilingual. French can also be an asset in Ontario, particularly at national level companies. Manitoba has a fairly large French speaking minority also, but outside these areas and perhaps Nova Scotia, french is not very common. The other poster is right about Vancouver -- French will not be much of an asset there -- employers there are looking for Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japonese speakers.

If you are interested in government, as the above have written, then you will want to have French abilities. Quebec is a rather powerful economic entity within Canada, so I imagine, but could be wrong, that French is important in some business circles/ fields as well.
