Immigration officials have received 51 calls from Canadians hoping to bring in family members affected by Saturday´s South Asian earthquake ? and three cases involving six affected victims are already in the process of being fast-tracked.

Last week, Citizenship and Immigration Canada placed on its website (http://www.cic.gc.ca) details on interim measures to expedite immigration applications for close kin of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are "seriously and personally" affected by the earthquake that hit Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

"First priority is to continue processing those in the family class, specifically spouses, partners and dependent children," explained department spokeswoman Cara Prest. "Applications submitted by other personally and seriously affected individuals, with close family ties to Canada, are being considered on a case-by-case basis."

Also, "sympathetic consideration" will be given to applications for work permits from foreign students, extensions of status for visitors and temporary workers, she added.

Adults may sponsor orphaned brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews or grandchildren younger than 18 as members of the family class.

As part of the relief effort, immigration application fees will be waived, but applicants must meet the usual medical and security requirements.

A public toll-free number (1-800-457-5035) has been set up to respond to inquiries on the new measures.

Immigration Canada adopted similar interim measures following the Dec. 26, 2004, Asian tsunami, but those measures were lifted at the end of July.

Omer, if your wife is OK and not homeless, why would you use such a tragedy to fast track someone who has no reason for such a priviledge. Do not mock Canadian compassion.

Priority should be given to those seriously and personally affected people.
