Subject: Importing a vehicle to Canada
I plan on landing in Canada in next couple months. I plan on driving from the US. Does anybody know whether I will have an option to import my vehicle at a later date? Any insights regarding :importing" such as excise/taxes, etc will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Deep,

Before you land in Canada as a PR please make a list of items you will take with you when you land and another "Goods to follow" list where you can list all the items you are planning to bring to Canada later on. You can list your car on the goods to follow list.

On these list briefly describe the items and provide an estimate value of the items. For electronic items please mention the serial number and for yor car mention the VIN. Take phtographa to expensive items like jewellery.

you will need a "recall clearance" letter from your car manufacturer which usually takes about a week to get.

I became a PR of Canada a week and a half ago. At customs, I told them I was bringing my car in. I presented my title and filled out the necessary paper work. As I was about to leave, the officer said as a side-note, "I noticed your title wasn´t stamped by the US side. They usually keep cars for 72 hours and check your title, stamping it if they let it be exported. Here, I´ll give you the phone # to US Customs and when you get home, you could give them a call to see what they want you to do."

I got home and called US Customs.

"What?!? You brought a car into Canada without exporting it?!? You´re going to get fined! You have to call Export. They´ll probably fine you." They then proceeded to give me the number to the Exporting Dept.

I called Export and told them my story.

"Well, usually when you take a car out of the US illegally-"

I interrupted. I had no idea it was illegal. I had no idea that anything had to be done. I thought all I had to do was declare it when I entered Canada. The border patrol officer had let me through only mentioning the fact that I had to officially export it as an, "oh, just by the way."

The export officer told me that the next time I come back to the States, I should stop by the Exporting Dept. with my original title and two copies as well as the Bill of Sale.

I told the officer that I didn´t have the Bill of Sale. He said that I should just come then with the title and two copies.

Today I came into the US. I stopped by customs to export my car. The officer told me I needed the Bill of Sale or nothing could be done.

The next time I go to the border, it will be to go into Canada. I´m going to need to take the car with me. I won´t be able to leave it in the US for 72 hours.

I don´t know what to do.
