I just got back from a weekend trip to Toronto, my first time to Canada. I though I would share my experience with aspiring immigrants who never have been to Canada before.
As soon as I crossed the US Canada boarder, I started experiencing subtle differences. The roads were a bit narrower than their US counterparts and distances being written in Kilometers (felt like home). I did not see many people following the speed limit, so I had to do what romans did while being in Rome. While we were near the vicinity of Toronto, the traffic got really bad. Finally I reached my hotel in downtown only to find that it did not have any parking space.
Though I had a rough start, things changed as soon as we were walking down the Spadina ave near down town. It was like a heaven for immigrants. There were ethnic restaurants every where and people from all over the world speaking different languages. I was impressed with the underground train and street cars, especially their frequency. I had no problem in navigating the streets with a Toronto map. At one station, I was standing with a map and probably with a little disoriented look, then one elderly fellow approached me and described me how the system worked and what should I do to reach harbor front. I was amazed and very pleasantly surprised. I figured life will be good and healthy if you do not have a car and live in or around down town toronto.
My business obligation was such that I did not get time to go to the museums, which I regretted and plan to do next time I visit Toronto. Though looked smaller and less extravagant compared to its US counterpart, Toronto is beautiful, clean and a very safe place to be. I loved it. On my way back I spent a night at Niagra Falls. The falls looked really beautiful but the town was very touristic and kinda tacky.
