Subject: have been asked to take ielts

Hi All,

I have applied for canadian immigration as a skilled worker - and i am using the service of a law firm (just decided that i didnt have the bandwidth to manage the application process myself).

When I signed up with this law firm - they told me I wouldnt need to take the ielts given my background (I did grade 1-12 and my bachelors degree in India and English was the language of instruction, I completed my Masters in Australia and the US, and have been working in the US for 5 years).

Today I got an email from the firm saying that CIC has become very strict on English requirements and have asked me to take the test in 120 days. I havent talked to the firm yet - will do so tomorrow - but I wanted to get your opinion on what I should do. Should I take the test or ask the firm to submit evidence of my English language abilities? They havent brought this up in the email they sent me - just said take the test - but I feel we should be able to prove I dont need this test - and thats part of this firm´s job as my representative.

Also, has anybody else faced this situation? How did you deal with it?

Thanks a lot in advance for your opinion and guidance in this matter.

If CIC asks you to take the test, you have to take the test. You may think it is unfair but those are the rules.

Don´t waste too much time trying to make a decision. If your English is as good as it seems, the test will be a breeze for you. Do it as soon as you can.

Good luck.

just take the test if they request it, no second choice here.

These days CIC is asking for test with people who have done Masters in US and have been working here fully knowing they have been conversing in English at their job.

I suggest take the test soonest possible. Also there is a heavy booking for IELTS due to CIC asking everyone with IELTS.

Move quick.

Take the test, the good thing is that since you have masters you only need to score 7 or above in two bands in the remaining two bands you can score between 6-7

Your lawyer has given you the right advice. CIC has indeed become very strict on English requirements. AS you have had most of your education in English appearing in IELTS should not be a problem.

Just get used to the format of the exam and you should be fine. As mentioned by others you MUST score atleast 7 in each section to get the max 16 points for english proficiency.

what is your time line? when did CIC become very strict on English requirements. I applied in June 2004, i had my boss wrote a letter to CIC saying English is my working language, and was not required to have the test. Maybe 2005 applicant are all required to have the test.

my friend applied in oct04, he was asked to take IELTS and placed the test july05. he got 6.5 average band, fortunately, the IA letter came 3 months later and interview was waived. he hired a lawfirm, too and got master degree from US.
my advice is...just do what you gotta do. they just want to make sure that you will be able to communicate in english fluently in their country. they may be learning from the immigrants from the past years who´s not required to take any language test.
good luck!
