"Today the Department is also making great strides in improving the way it delivers services to clients. Call centre response times are up, more applications are being processed faster, and potential immigrants can get information about their cases faster and more easily. The Department has increased its capacity to serve applicants who want to come to Canada by hiring and training new staff. It has added new services that allow prospective immigrants to find out about the status of their application by email from anywhere in the world"

Any comments?

and that does what for INCANADA spouse applications? says they are not back to 7-8 months (instead of 6-7) and only reviewing up to March 21st.

Pokmi. What typo posted is actually something that was published yesterday in the Toronto Star (www.thestar.com) and it´s true, it´s not an immigration office, but something that did happen and it includes Canadian members of parliament who decided to block government funds that the CIC was planning on using. Here´s the whole article taken for the Toronto Star:

Immigration funds blocked
Volpe lashes out at opposition MPs System in `disarray,´ Tories sayPrograms jeopardized, angry Volpe says after committee vote

Funds rejected because system in `disarray,´ opposition alleges

BRUCE CAMPION-SMITH
OTTAWA BUREAU

OTTAWA?A host of federal immigration programs ? including efforts to reunite families and eliminate backlogs ? are in jeopardy after opposition parties blocked $168 million in new funding for the immigration department.

The surprise decision by the Commons committee also undercuts a pending immigration deal with Ontario that would have meant extra cash for Queen´s Park to help settle new immigrants in the province.

Immigration Minister Joe Volpe came out swinging yesterday, suggesting that the Conservatives and Bloc Qu?b?cois were anti-immigrant for voting against the new cash.

"The first chance they had to show support for an immigration plan that is comprehensive ... for settlement and integration programs and they said `no.´ They shut the door down," Volpe said.

"The Conservative party´s attitude to immigration is keep those people out and send them back," the minister added.

The Commons immigration committee voted 6-5 on Tuesday against the federal department´s proposal to spend an extra $168 million this year to fund improvements.

According to the department, the fallout from the budget vote includes:

#
A backlog of citizenship applications that will grow to 150,000 by year´s end with waiting times of two years and more.

#
Fewer parents and grandparents will be able to come to Canada and they will wait much longer to get here.

#
Fewer resources to help settle newcomers.

#
Gains made by the Immigration and Refugee Board to reduce its backlog of cases will be "reversed."

Volpe said none of that can happen now.

"I don´t know how we can spend money we aren´t authorized to use. You can´t put forward a plan without resources," he said.

But opposition MPs said Volpe himself is to blame for the vote after his "arrogant" and "evasive" appearance before the committee.

Conservative MP Diane Ablonczy (Calgary-Nose Hill) said Volpe was quizzed on how the department missed its target for skilled workers by 6,000 last year, at a time when there were 700,000 people in the backlog waiting to be processed.

"The system is in such disarray, it would be irresponsible as a committee to just shrug our shoulders ... and let these votes go through pro forma," Ablonczy said. "That´s not responsible when you know the problems are so deep and so widespread," she said.

Volpe said the improvements tackle the very issues that opposition members of Parliament have been seeking action on.

"We´ve been putting in mechanisms that everybody agrees is required ... including the opposition members," Volpe said. "They´re either hypocrites or liars."

The funding package also included more than $20 million to fund the first year of an immigration deal with Ontario.

While federal immigration officials acknowledge that the deal was not ready to sign, they say there is no chance of it happening until the funding is restored.

The committee can reconsider its decision or the Commons can vote to adopt the spending proposals in December.

At Queen´s Park, Ontario Citizenship and Immigration Minister Mike Colle insisted a deal between the province and Ottawa is "very close."

ok guys... lesson #1 in Canadian politics. the money was held back because Volpe could not explain how it was going to be used and why he needed it. They did not say no forever. Volpe is playing ´Chicken Little´ because they are facing an election and want to scare every immigrant in the country into thinking the conservative party is anti-immigrant and it would be detrimental to vote for them.

words like ´disarray´ are used to get a reporters attention - and they got it.

Such news release are standard political views. Unless specific numbers or introduction of a policy are mentioned it really does not mean anything.

Therefore, the delay is due to lack of money?
