Actually there are 3 different checks -

- Criminal (taken care of by police certificates)

- Background - verification of background/personal info and education/experience credentials. Includes contacting employers in many cases.

- Security - is conducted by Canadian intelligence and security agencies, with or without cooperation of proper authorities in all countries you resided in since age 18 (for some national since age 16).

It looks deep (very deep) into your background, life, activities and associations to see if you are or ever were involved and/or are or were associated in any way with someone who is or was involved in terrorism, espionage, organized crime, crimes against humanity, radical groups, etc.

This check usually starts after successful interview or interview waiver. Unfortunately authorities in some countries take months or longer than a year to reply to inquiries from Canadian authorities and in some countries check has to be done using old fashion spy methods. Therefore depending on your background, nationality, countries you resided in and other factors it may take anywhere from a few months to well over a year to complete.

You mean they will check my job history after IA.
What did they do before that?

Applications are processed on a first come first serve basis. When the file is received initially they check if the forms are filled in properly, if you have provided all the supporting documents required and if you have paid the right fee. If everything is ok the applicant is issued a file number (AOR).

After issuing AOR the file is put in queue. The file is then looked at by the immigration official at the time of IA.

Background check is started after AOR itself...they don´t wait for IA for that.

John,

After IA the background and security checks are initiated. After the checks are complete and the medical is cleared you will be asked to pay RPRF and then passport request is sent.

I was asked to pay RPRF in Oct 2004 with other documents, which I did by 2005 Jan.

However, BG Checks are still on as shown on my CAIPS notes.

So request by CIC to pay RPRF is NOT and indication that BG checks are over.
