Sharon:: When you give your points of view, you speak on the name of every single canadian, I am canadian too, but I don´t have any problem if people change their minds and decide to move out of Canada. If you would have the chance to have an excelent opportunity to do bussiness or work outside Canada, would you stay here??
I pay taxes , but everybody has to pay them, that´s a rule for most part of people in the world, please instead of being judgmental with this poor people who is just trying to have a better place to live show them a real welcoming, because that´s what we suppose to be.

misunderstood (in reply to: Sharon....)
I am sorry. I do not think I have come across the way I wanted to. I am a champion of the chance for a better life. My grandparents came to Canada to homestead in Saskatchewan and made a wonderful life for their children and grandchildren. Right now I am helping a skilled worker immigrate to Canada. I have seen the confusion of the process first hand. I think many of our immigration rules and criteria are archaic and discriminatory to people of third world countries. My question about ´why´ is because I see so many talented immigrants waiting 3-4 years to come and then working far below their skills and education because we do have the jobs or we do not recognize their certification. I worry and wonder if they are disappointed at the end of the day.

Hi Sharon.... (in reply to: Sharon....)
Don´t worry Sharon:: I can realise that you are a nice person, sometimes we say things that are misunderstood, but that´s why conversation is very important. Good for you trying to help this person to immigrate.

Interesting Thread (in reply to: Sharon....)
what a really interesting discussion.

i think waiting 3 to 4 years in order to get Canadian immigration papers is a test (albeit unintended) in itself of a person´s commitment to becoming a Canadian immigrant. of course, there are people who just consider immigration to Canada as a "back up" plan. it may seem unethical, but that is their choice.

one thing that makes Canada seem like "paradise" is that we are free to make individual choices. as u know, majority of the citizens of this world do not have that freedom. of course, we have to be very selective on who we welcome in. to become a Canadian is a great privilege in its own right.

another virtue of Canadians is their compassion in being mindful of these words ... "I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink. I was naked and you clothed Me. I was an alien and you welcomed Me. Anyone who has done this to the least of My brethren, you have done it unto Me."

I have been helping a skilled worker immigrate for the past 2 years from northern Africa. If I have learned anything, is that our system is hugely flawed. My friend must save 2 years wages to prove he can settle in Canada. How will that ever be possible. We make rules that are supposed to help people succeed but all we do is make it impossible for those who see Canada as a opportunity for a better life to come here. We have become an entrepreneurial plan B for those who have the luxury of choosing tax systems. To ask someone to wait 3-4 years for answers about their future is inhumane. What they could do in their own country with thier time, energy and settlement money! Canada needs brick layers, and carpenters and house framers... but only accept doctors and engineers! Many of them can´t work in their area of training. What are we doing! I read some of the postings on this forum and I want to scream. Some want to come because they think we have trees that grow money. They have no idea what it will take to survive here. Others sound so lost and discouraged that their dreams will never come true. These stories are the ones that break my heart.

I don´t know what can be done to change our rules but hopefully for some of these dear people, Ottawa will have a re-think soon.

Very interesting point.... (in reply to: Sharon....)
Hello Sharon:
I am from Central America, and I am immigrating to Canada because my partner lives here and we have no rights as a gay cuople in my country. I had been to Canada so many times before submitting my application and I had a general idea about how expensive is to live in this country.
I have some friends in my country of origin who have the idea that in North America money falls from the sky and when the come here full of wrong expectations they get really depressed and disapointed.

I am sure you and your partner will find full acceptance and protection in Canada. I know you will do very well because you have someone that will help you find your way, and will encourage you when everything seems far too different and far too hard. You might want to invest in some long underwear. I understand that new Canadian´s from warm climates are cold all the time! Good luck my friend.

Yes, I've bought tons of clothes... (in reply to: Sharon....)
I definetily have my clothes for the winter, and I don´t complain about it because the city where I was born is way too hot and humid, so for me much more comfortable this weather. By the way..i have one quuestion and i would really appreciate if you have an idea about it.
My partner is sponsoring me as a common-law(inland application) and everything is almost complete: they´ve received my medical, I´ve been approved in principal and i have a work Permit. I´ve called the center a couple of times to ask the why desicion hasn´t been made yet and I was told that every thing looks fine with my application, they are just waiting for my background clearence results from the CIS. They don´t know how long it´ll take to get them finished. Do you have any idea about how long it takes to get that clearence?? I was approved in principle the first days of june,2004 and I they received my application on september 16th, 2003. They started processing on march, 2004.
If somebody has experience about this any input will be well apprecciated.
