UofT is the best for most areas of history, including just a broad major. Besides the history department there´s also classics, medieval studies, ancient near east (egyptology and assyriology), and other ethnic departments that offer history courses. The classics and medieval departments are the best in north america and the near eastern department is one of about a dozen in the world. The libraries are the best in the country and the school is affiliated with the ROM. Plenty of famous professors at every level but the downside is most of the undergrad marking is done by TAs - you don´t actually get the esteemed professor´s opinion of your work, just get to listen to their lectures. York also has a decent history department (so I hear) and a few top Canadian history professors (so say my profs).
