Subject: York University is GREAT ! !
I am an American from the area around Nashville, TN who is currently studying in the very popular, reputable yet controversial York University in Toronto, Canada. All my life I have lived in a very conservative setting. I am a Catholic, I come from a wealthy family, my friends are all either apathetic or conservative, my parents voted for Bush etc.
I chose the unconventional route in life. Whilst my brothers went to New England colleges and took part in the typical lacrosse, swimming, sailing etc, I chose to do something different.

York has given me this chance. To be a part of a community where there is literally every type of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation, style and vision, I am truly grateful. Regarding the racial tension on campus, this just represents the apparency throughout the world. Fostering an intelligence breed that is allowed to express this formality and expression should ALWAYS be enouraged. I am glad that York is a leftist leaning university. It gives you the opportunity to explore other ideas and notions that would not be done otherwise.

Other side notes, I was reading some of the posts and found some hate mail to York U. Obviously this is racially placed notes that I read and thus I will disregard. However, don´t you dare insult my home....York U. We are the best University in Canada and are known far and wide for its great and reputable programs....Law, Fine Arts, History, Poltical Science, Business, Education, Women´s Studies, Math. There is an amazing and buzzing campus life, great social scene among the dorms, huge and beautiful campus, and many scholars and respected profs.

This is a university student forum... people here raz on other schools. It´s what undergrads do. Don´t take it personally. Tribalism is a human trait and probably an evolutionary advantage.

I would be suprised if there were more than 25 pure maths students at York.

It´s the U of T students who have the inferiority complex.
They feel threatened by York U, so they feel the need to bash York.

Why do you think Toronto hasn´t built a subway line up to York U yet?

The politicians at Queens Park (being mostly U of T graduates) are afraid York would attract more students than U of T!

No, because building a subway to York would cost several billion dollars. It would be convenient for York students but just not feasible given how piss poor the TTC is. There are other parts of the city where building a subway extension would result in more tax revenue and they´ve been fighting for subway lines too.

That´s an excuse. Tell me what area needs a a subway line outside the downtown core more than York?

^ To the above poster,

Does the TTC have any other subway extensions planned?

Yes. The 2001 Rapid Transit Expansion Study also short-listed an extension of the Sheppard Subway from Don Mills Station east to Scarborough City Centre. Because the Study re-affirmed the EA-approved alignment, a new Environmental Assessment is not required for this project. There is no other work proceeding at this time for the Sheppard project.

YES ! !

York *doesn´t* need a subway line. Why? It´s not near a business centre. The north end of the city is mostly manufacturing, backoffice services and residential areas. Neither of the first two need a subways line (TTC transit already covers the area, though it could use more) and the residential areas around York don´t exactly have the same kind of pull wealthier, less crime-ridden areas do.

I have nothing against York personally. Neither UTSC or UTM are going to get subway lines anytime soon for the same reasons. And current York students wouldn´t see the benefit anyways... it would take years to build. How come it´s only current York students and not York grads pushing for a subway line? Because grads get jobs and realize how much money it´d cost so current York students can sleep in later. The money would either have to come from taxes or redistributing billions already going to other services.

So yes Andy, money is an excuse... a very good one. It´s more reasonable to just ask for more buses.

Well, your parents did vote for Bush, so your intellectual capabilities probably only allow you to enter institutions such as York.

Not his fault if his parents are fundamentalist freaks trying to speed up the Rapture. At least a York graduate is guaranteed to be less braindead than that.
