It depends on whether you want to get your master´s (and perhaps PhD) or not.

For postgraduate studies, the reputation of the university is quite important. For work, however, only your first employer will care.

If you´re going to pursue postgraduate studies, UBC, otherwise, SFU will be just fine.

PS: the post about the billion Chinese is right. There will be some extreme competition at UBC, and many Chinese people in engineering will be quite competitive. You will be much more stressed out for sure.

So lets say I decide to go to SFU and I graduate. Does this mean I cannot switch from SFU to UBC to continue on my studies later? I´m not too sure how universities approach transfers. getting a masters and PHD is allot of money as well. I will be so far in to debt getting my PHD unless I work or get scholarships. so my question now is, I deffinetly "want" to persue a masters or a doctorate at this point, but am unsure of my ability or financial capability to complete so many years of school. do you think I should attend UBC anyway to see how far I can go? It certainly seems that should be the right path.

You don´t have to do your grad degree at the same school you got your undergrad. Neither UBC or SFU will discriminate against each other´s degrees, and the rest of Canadian universities don´t discriminate against UBC and SFU undergrads.
