Subject: Mcgill & Waterloo
Hey...
I´m so confused about universities! AH!
I´ve gotten accepted to York, Western, St. Francis Xavier, Waterloo & McGill
Now comes the choice....I don´t know where to go...but for me, it´s between mcgill (bcom major) and waterloo (honours arts and regular).
I want to do economics...but I still wonder if i´d be able to get a job with it! So that´s why I´m open to more business subjects...like finance and stuff...
For this, i think mcgill would be better....but then again, i´m still confused as hell...

AHHH! OKAY....so where should I go?
Did I make any sense what so ever? LOL sorry~

Listen, I am a finance major and doing a bachelor of commerce. Here is a little advice for you: do not do a B.comm.

If you want a good job, you should go into actuarial mathematics, or you should go into statistics and economics. If you are smart and mathematically talented, you should consider doing an honours degree in statistics at Mcgill and use your electives to study economics or finance. This is what I should have done...

I have looked at the honours in stats at Mcgill, and it is rigorous and very good. You will have the proper training to delve into the advanced topics of finance such as derivatives pricing and forecasting.

You could also consider Concordia. They have a new program I have just read about called Actuarial mathematics and finance, it is worth the look.

I forgot, remember to go on the university websites and have a look at the curriculums; check which courses you have to take and compare...

Good luck!

Of all those universities for a BComm, go to York or Western. Forget about Waterloo as it is not very well known for business and arts (more of a science school). McGill is a good choice but it is also a science school..... St. FX is not really a stellar university, even though it is top in primary category schools, the life and the academics are not very respected for the real world. It is also very far. Waterloo is not a great town but if you are planning to minor in math or stats, i will say give it a try.

But for BComm, BBA etc, York, Queens and Western are the best and have great university life on their campus.

I am sorry, I have to interfere here. The curriculum at YOrk for BBA is disgusting. Anyhow, I would stay clear from a B.Comm. (TRUST ME!!)

If you want to work in finance, then go into statistics and econometrics. (Study statistics, and economics.)

Do not start this ranking process...You will start a feud.

For instance, it is easy to see that you forgot the University of Calgary and the Haskayne school of business.

Did you know that at ICBC (the largest undergrad business competition), the University of Calgary was by far the best team followed by Concordia ?

It should also be mentionned that these schools have different strengths. Some schools are better for some majors...If I were to study finance, where would I go? If I were to study marketing, where would I go? If I were to study accounting where would I go?

I MUST REMIND YOU THAT YORK´S CURRICULUM IS NOT VERY GOOD. HAVE A LOOK AT THE CORE COURSES AND YOUR OPTIONS AS ELECTIVES. HECK, IN SOME CASES YOU CAN EVEN DOWNLOAD SOME COURSE OUTLINES!

Thanks SO MUCH! U´ve really been a lot of help...

I´m going to e-mail both waterloo and mcgill now asking if I´d be able to transfer to actuarial science...or statistics (mcgill)
Hopefully they´ll allow that...thanks again!

Mcgill does not have a very good actuarial program...

Consider Waterloo (actuarial science) or Concordia (Actuarial mathematics and finance)

good luck

I tried to give her the best advice I had to offer.

I think she is able to be a critical thinker and use my advice as she wishes.

Sheesh.
