Some of you are beyond help.

It is important for students to study in a lucrative field in order to get a good job, BUT a degree from queens or waterloo will not get you any farther than a degree form any other univeristy!!!

I remember down the page someone said it takes about 5 years before employers stop looking at your school, i doubt even that.. if someone asks what school you came from at a job interview they are trying to make conversation, not judge you based on the school you attended. They are not highschool students like you, and they have been around long enough to realise the special advantages a waterloo degree holds over the next. NONE.

After your first job, employers will actually have somthing important to talk about with you. Belive it or not, they dont want to talk about your queens degree with you!

So lean on your Queens degrees like a crutch while kids from lakehead, laurentian and carleton beat you out for jobs.

The 5 years I mentioned in my post was just an example. With more frequent job changes these days, maybe after a couple of years, there would be some actual work experience to fill the gaps in a resume.

Freshly minted graduates make a big deal about their degree cuz that´s all they got. People with any real work experience and those who do the hiring know better.

ok. you are right, but partly. Things are different at the grad level.

So if you graduate from McGill, you can work at unis like Harvard or MIT. If you graduate from Lakehead, on the other hand, no matter how good you are, the unis you can work at are limited.

I agree with the original poster. The reason many managers really don´t care about what university you graduated from is becuase they never went to university themselves.

In Canada, relevant "Canadian" work experience is far more important than where you went to university.

i wouldnt say that exactly.. for example someone with an engineering education often gets thrown into lower managment position very quickly after univeristy (3-5yrs) where as someone with no education would have to work at the company for 25 years to get the same job.

Managers within a scientific field almost always have univeristy education. And they are definatly not uneducated about canadian universitys, theyve just grown out of the "im better than everyone cause i went to waterloo" phase of their lives.

Obviously you wouldnt see many Lakehead PHD´s teaching at harvard, we have very few doctorate programs and very few spots compared to any of the larger schools like UofT. But thats not to say that a lakehead doctor couldnt work there if he was successful enough as a reseacher. We just dont produce enough doctors.
