Subject: university research...
Alot of people seem to throw around numbers indicating the amount of research done at particular universitys... then you guys use it to argue that your university is better. Now tell me... if your profs are stending all day researching then whos teaching the class? hah masters students thats who.. so wouldnt that sort of diminish the quality of teaching?

you´re dumb. i don´t know about the situation at mcgill, but here at uoft, our classes are taught by professors, not grad students. we have grad students that help out the prof, by helping with marking, answering questions, or instructing labs, but the actual course is taught by profs. now, there may be the odd time where a grad student (TA) is given the opportunity to give a lecture, but that is by no means a regular occurance.

you may be thinking about the states. down south they´re having a problem with a lot of classes being taught by grad students.

look at chomsky. he´s the most cited academic, he has written like 50+ books, and pratically invented linguistics, yet he has been teaching classes at MIT for a long time (i think he is pretty much retired from that now tho). just because profs teach classes doesn´t mean they have no time for research.

go to bed yorkie.

Professors face internal pressures from within research-intensive institutions to "publish or perish".

If you were a UofT prof, where would your priorities lie? Focus on teaching a bunch of freshmen kids, or work on your research and possible ticket to fame?
