I am an Assistant Professor of Marketing Management in India, with a 6 and a half years of teaching experience with reputed govt. university. I wish to relocate to Vancouver, Canada along with my wife. I am an MBA, MA(Economics) and a Computer Applications Diploma holder. I want to get handy information about life in Vancouver - Costs of Living, Suitable Accomodation, Do´s and Don´ts of the city etc.
Somebody please let me know the city with a very practical perspective (for settling down and not from a tourist´s point of view)
pommy Posted - 6/7/2006 4:18:16 AM ok the truth is, with your qualifications and the country you come from, the best job you can get here is being a cabbie a taxi driver if you dont know what that is, and/or work as a cleaner at mcdonalds or some fast food outlet. as for vancouver city, you will most probably live in surrey which is filled with 1,20,000 east indians. since you will be busy doing your taxi job or cleaning work and busy, your wife will be frustrated with you and will keep nagging you. and after sometime the tall bearded sikh east indian next door will lay eyes on your wife. soon, when you are away from work, he comes in to your home, and becomes a friend to your wife, and comforts her in the far off land. and soon before you even know it, they are in bed and together having steamy naked sex, while you will be working your butt off in a restaurant cleaning or burning your butt off in a cab. soon you come back and find your wife behaving strange, you promise her, oh dont worry darling life in canada will be big,, BUT it aint the case, you will be frustrated. soon your wife will leave you and go to that guy next door, you will be angry and pick a fight, he hits you, you run away . your canadian dream shatters. we dont need any more east indians here. already full of it and doing crime. i suggest stay in your india and be happy with the job you got. i hope this helps. all the best.

I would not come to Canada unless you have a big circle of friends and family to help you get connected. You will end up in a low paying job as stated by pommy previously. You will also end up in Surrey where there is a huge Sikh community. Surrey is not a bad place. But that is where you will mosy likely end up. Unless you have a lot (and i do mean alot) of money, you could then live in East Vancouver. I would not imigrate my family to Canada unless I had at least a half a million in U.S. funds to back me up in case things get tough job market wise.
Professor Posted - 6/7/2006 5:34:09 AM Hey is it pessimism or realism? Are things really that bad?
Professor Posted - 6/7/2006 5:36:40 AM Wouldn,t my qualifications be regarded there? After all both India and Canada are commonwealth nations??
rahim Posted - 6/7/2006 5:44:59 AM A degree in India isnt worth a damn in Canada. Canada is way ahead of india when it comes to Degrees, skills etc. You are better off staying in India and help your fellow countrymen build a stable nation.
capt Posted - 6/7/2006 5:51:21 AM You cannot expect to come to Canada right off the bat, get a wicked job , make a million dollars , have a huge house ,cars, etc. You will be extremely jelous of Canadians becuase they have everything you want. Success, decent country, excelent culture, life etc. So many people are envious of Canadians and that will only make you bitter.............
Professor Posted - 6/7/2006 6:45:51 AM What if I first obtain a PhD in Business Management from University of British Columbia? Why do you people so underassess me?? I am not an itsy bitsy young freak!!!! I am a successful professional of 32 years looking for greater achievements in this globalised world. I have had best of the trainings here in my field and have achieved accolades.
Is it a demotivating conspiracy??
Urban Janitor Posted - 6/7/2006 7:18:04 AM
Hey professor, unfortunately Canada is very insular about non-Canadian degrees and qualifications. Your only bet would be to do a PhD at UBC, but then you would need a lot of money to fund yourself. I´d advise against your proposed move, unless your willing to take non-professional employment (which I suggest would be waste).
spread the word Posted - 6/7/2006 7:59:34 AM Check notcanda.com and canadaimmigrants.com if you don?t believe the previous posters.
Simba Posted - 6/7/2006 8:32:06 AM Professor, Don´t being a chootia. I totally agree with other posters. Your future lies in India not here. About your Phd plans, what do you think, it´s easy to get admission at UBC. You may have to wait for 7-10 yrs. to get even a chance there. In the mean time, you´ll drive a cab and your wife´ll be ****ing with your neighbour..
Professor Posted - 6/7/2006 9:46:48 AM
Thanks a million!!!! You brought the crude brutality of Canada to the fore. I visited the forums at NotCanada.com and CanadaImmigrants.com These were full of sobby stories. PhDs driving a cab. MBAs serving as pizza delivery boys. Doctors applying as a store boy. It Yuckkkks!!!!!!!
Thank God I came to know the reality very early. I am really successful and happy in India and earning my livelihood in a dignified manner. One thing bothers me though ..........
What about those colourful, polished websites that display the scenic beauty of Canada and scream about the highest Standards of living in the world!!!!!!!!!! What about the plush offices of the immigrant lawyers!!!! And their rosy explainations of Canada as a wonderland.
Is it a God Damn ......DEMO VERSION of cAnAdA????????????
Everybody else beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fred Posted - 6/7/2006 9:59:07 AM Actually, I think Professor should come. We need more labour people here in Canada.
The same old story from tens of thousands of apnay, in the form of...
"I have two Ph.D´s, currently live in a huge house in India, full of servants. My spouse also has a high paying job in India, and we are living a great life. But...we want to come to Canada, because money grows on trees there. Also immigration cda says that there´s lots of opportunities for Ph.D´s in specialized fields such as nuclear chemical reaction engineering. And yes, I do believe them. They would never lie. Also in the bollywood movies shot in Canada, every actor drives around in a Mercedes convertible singing songs with the heroine. Maybe if I come to Canada, I don´t have to work and can also drive around all day. Wow! What a life!"
Then someone gives some honest, candid truth. Then the story becomes...
"You don´t want me there because I will become super successful like Akshay Kumar, or whoever. You are jealous of my potential success. Now I will come and take revenge (badla). Also, I have a better Ph.D. from India compared to the 50,000 other apnays with Ph.D.´s in Canada"
They show up and six months later, the story becomes...
"Man, what a mistake. I should have stayed in India. I had a great job, great house, wife and kids were happy. Easy life. Now I can´t even go back, otherwise I will face shame in the community. I will continue to work as a taxi driver. Gee, I thought I was different than the other 80,000 educated apnay taxi drivers."
You know, this cycle will never end. People from India will never learn. They have a developing country and don´t want to participate in its success. Like I said, come if want by all means and check out the market. But please don´t complain afterwards that you don´t have the job of your dreams, and you´re driving a taxi. Hey, nothing wrong with driving taxi - after all, a man has to eat and feed his family, but you will spend the rest of your life trying to make ends meet.
Professor, also keep in mind that if your educated neighbour went to Canada/US, betcha he´s mopping floors. Don´t buy all the success stories you hear.
Can all these Internet posts from other apnay with unfortunate circumstances all be wrong?
Good luck Professor.
Onstage Posted - 6/7/2006 10:01:16 AM lol professor how could you become a professor if you still do not understand those inviting posters in official and non offical sites, they need your money, they need cap drivers, they need cleaners especially higly qualified ones...
forget those comments about your wife having an affair with other men i guess the guys above are just sharing their personal experience but finding a job with an indian degree ?/ well nobody gives a shti to that ...
@@@ Posted - 6/7/2006 11:42:04 AM Professor..Good! Seems like better sense prevailed!
Dougald Posted - 6/7/2006 11:51:27 AM
Canada is a great place if you´ve the skills and qualifications we need.
Why would we want to import academics from the third world when domestic graduates already outstrip demand?
think Posted - 6/7/2006 12:19:47 PM
last time I took a cab the driver was a professional engineer from India
Advice Posted - 6/7/2006 12:59:20 PM Hey Prof,
Everyone on this forum is right. Sadly. Whether you have a PHD, MBA, doesn´t mean a damn thing here. They DO NOT recognize your qualifications, unless if from a Canadian Institution, or equivalent.
Yes, most east indians that immigrate here end up driving cabs, working as roofers or painters. I know someone who was a doctor from India who is painting homes.

|immigrants (in reply to: migration to canada)
For the people of India, Pakistan or any of those foreign countries...why would you want to come to Canada if you are so well off and happy where you are? Please stay the hell out of Canada, as we already have too many immigrants here. Are you trying to take over our country ? We are not trying to take yours, so keep yours and we´ll keep ours...
